Do these spoilers really work? Im 6'3" and my head gets buffeted by the wind. I assume they just clamp onto the windscreen? Also, what purpose does the suggested 'hard part' serve that Touratech recommend?

Don't have any experience with the Touratech Spoilers.... however the principle's the same..........

In 2009 I bought a new SOHC GSA and although I adjusted the seat as high as it can go..........(due to the leg issue) and the screen as high as it could go...... height issue at 6'4" ........... I kept being buffeted by the wind.

I added a small spoiler manufactured here in SA called an Aerotrim ............ and was immediately aware of the difference with the buffeting now gone.
After 2 years I sold the bike - moved to the UK and treated myself to a new GSA from Vines...........

The ride home from the dealership was really hectic for me... something was amiss........ buffeting like crazy (I'd not yet adjusted the screen) ....... but once home - set the screen and added the new Aerotrim that I'd brought over from SA.
Another ride a few hours later confirmed that all was well and once more the ride was pleasurable!

Did a trip with GRIZZ on his GS to France..... he mentioned buffeting on the long stretches at speed....... so once we got back home, I loaned him a spare Aerotrim I'd brought with - just in case!

He LOVED it.......... changed his riding experience as well....... and he then promptly searched for and found an Adventure screen to upgrade his GS (he's a short shit... so the spoiler was not needed! :D)

I sold my UK GSA in October last year, got back to SA for extended visit - bought another new GSA and first thing I did was add the Aerotrim for the 2000km ride home......... an absolute pleasure!

So in short - yes - highly recommended to add a spoiler - especially coming from another tall bloke!

Not quite, old chap. There was never a SOHC engine. The pre - 2010 engines were best described as cam-in-head as the cam was positioned "below" the rockers which were actuated by short pushrods.

I'm 6'2" tall and I've fitted a TT spoiler to my 2010 GSA as I was getting buffeted All the time, I was unable to ride over 15mph with the visor up on my tour x as my eyes were streaming, but now I can ride upto 80 mph with my visor up and my eyes are fine.

As for the hard part, never bought it and it seems secure enough to me.

I love it and would get another without a doubt.

Absolutely agree with this.
It also helps keep the visor free from bugs

Some people complain that the spoiler hinders their view of the road???
I don't think they are looking far enough.

I find that the spoiler disperses the wind so well that there are 2 small downsides for me.
1. In rain, without the spoiler, the natural wind effect blows away the droplets from the visor, you lose this effect.
2. Similarly in hot weather you can miss the cooling air blast

I am renewing mine this summer at TT Germany. :thumb2:thumb2:thumb2

Agreeing with all +ve spoiler comments. At 6'4" standard adjustable screens aren't tall enough and after market options are limited or prohibitively expensive to buy on the off-chance they will solve the issue.

I have a Wunderlich version like this which I've had on both F800GS and my current RT. It's an excellent piece of kit. :clap

Thanks for the detailed reply Goose:thumb2

Does the Aeorotrim clamp onto the windscreen, or does it require drilling?

The Aerotim gives you both options - however the double sided tape they supply on the unit is pure crap........... I bought some Gorilla Double sided tape in the UK, which did the job nicely.... I don't like drilling things - especially the screen! So far - I've never had one come loose!

I must also back Norm's statement that the 2 negatives are the lack of airflow to cool you down, but I mainly wear the Lookwell Atlantis airflow jacket and all's well............. the rain on the visor used to be a problem, which is easily solved - just lift yer but out of the seat slightly and the airflow will clear the visor......... I don't however ride with the visor closed.... ever! I do however use a pair of Ugly Fish riding glasses/goggles that's the business.....

My comment however should be taken as a punt for the spoilers......... I'm not recommending one over the other .... just that they do work and the nice thing is that if you have a loose fitting/clamping unit - you can always remove it when it irritates you and merely put it back when you miss the protection.

apologies mate - yes indeed the pre-2010 engines were's SOHC........ was just an easy phrase to use to differentiate........

Does anyone have experience of a spoiler fitted to the new model WC GSA? The polycarbonate screen is already a tad wobbly as it is, with what appears to be a slightly reduced wall thickness compared to older models. I'm wondering whether it could capably support an add-on? :nenau

Bear.........in 38 years of biking the best thing I have ever bought Touratech spoiler......visor up any speed etc. Fantastic bit of kit

TC GSA n 6ft 6in ere

Any idea what the Hard Part' is that Touratech recommend fitting?

"We recommend that you fit our Hard Part (item no. 044-0380) when using our spoiler."

http://shop.touratech.co.uk/hard-part-windscreen-bmw-r1200gs-aluminium-up-to-2012.html

Hard Part windscreen BMW R1200GS Aluminium up to 2012 The Touratech aluminium versions replace the BMW plastic ones that can easily break under the strain of extra weight on the screen. I have my Zumo mounted on the GSA support bar and the plastic pieces are wearing quite badly.

A possible alternative is the Wunderlich Adjustable Screenholder which has some adjustment like small tobinators.

I have just returned from a 6000 mile round trip from the UK to Iraq, using the Touratech extender, I am 6'3" and it has been fantastic in reducing the wind buffet and noise, as other have mentioned during heavy rain due to the reduced air flow on your helmet it is harder to see, otherwise an excellent thing.

Ranking as one of my top 3 add ons for long distance travel the other 2 are heated grips and a Sargent saddle!

That sounds an impressive trip IOWGS. Ive got the Sergent saddle but had to remove it as it gave me back ache, I find the standard seat more comfortable, but obviously its a personal thing. Pleased your TT spoiler worked well for you.

I use an xcreen on my r1150gsa and it works great...........definately the best set up and ive tried mra vario, tobinators etc etc.

Hi Guys
I have a BMW F650GS twin 2010 with a Wunderlich vario screen. No matter where I position it the buffeting is driving me nuts. Your posts have given me hope of a solution and I've ordered the Aerotrim. I will report back on how I get on. I am a short guy by the way, my wife reckons I'm just not toughing it out and it's akin to manful syndrome. What do ye think of my chances of an improvement? Thanks to all who have posted.

Best regards

Found a TT spoiler on ebay for a good price, I think its the model for the GS as opposed to the GSA, but not sure of the differences. Will try it out tomorrow..
