Is it possible for the home bod to trace which country an email address is registered to, or originates from? :nenau

The not so useful answer is sometimes. The address/location of the server it is sent from will be in the headers of the email but that may not be where the sender is. For example if you send from Hotmail it may appear as if it is from Redmond USA but you could be in London UK. Even worse is say my my email address (it's my own domain name) is a UK address but my email server is a Google server probably located in the states but could be in any number of places.

Make sense?

Depends what email software you use as to how you view the headers so we'd need more info on that for directions.

I use Yahoo Mail (unfortunately) but I have no idea how to access headers? There is no readily available visible info other than the senders mail address.

You will need to have a search for that one. I have never used yahoo mail, although I am assuming you use it via a Web browser as opposed to connecting to it with say outlook. There will be an option some where.

I've looked in 'Options' but nothing relates to headers or further sender info. Yes, it is used by having a browser open. I also have Outlook but can't find anything in there either! I don't have Outlook on my lappy so that too is accessed via a browser. Gone are the days when you could buy lappy with Outlook already installed.

I have just opened a yahoo mail account and the instructions in the link I gave you are spot on for the webmail/browser based version. Open the email click more and then view full header.

Mark, thanks for your efforts to help on this!

Something weird happens on this new style UKGSER site, in so much as I often find posts have appeared in between posts, that weren't there before! So, when I last posted , your post (#6) wasn't displayed.

Moving on.... I have found the the Header info in 'Actions' , not 'More' as stated in that link, in fact there is no 'More'! :D

I now have a ton of info available but....nothing says in rent-a-dope language which nationality the mail is sent from , that I can see? There is plenty of this though ......

I think I might just lie down now....

If looking in the header of an email it is possible to identify the IP address of the computer that the email was composed from, I think you need to look for something like this:
Code:
X-Originating-IP
You could then use a site like en.utrace.de to find out information about that IP address, such as the ISP who owns it and country of origin etc.

However, it's worth pointing out that the IP address could well have been spoofed, particularly if the person was using some form of a proxy or VPN server to access the internet when sending the email

Thank you for that ! :clap

Unfortunately it doesn't provide what I am looking for. It shows the mail sender origins , U.S (AOL) and it's via point as somewhere between The Westminster Collection and Methodist Central Hall Westminster, :D but not where country from where the original computer and original mail was sent from. That's my take on it anyway.

Thanks for the info and link. :thumb2

Never seen an originating computer address in the header outside an internal mail system. The best you can hope for is the originating mail server which you have as AOL. Country might not help much as it could well be a central location for AOL and not the senders country. No Idea what is wrong with the mail your getting but you can send a complaint to AOL who does have the senders details. They won't give you them but if a bad enough complaint will block the sender. Another route if you feel the need is to go via the police who can also get the full details from AOL and pursue the sender.

If it's just someone yanking your chain or spamming you then it's probably not worth the effort and add them to your spam list. Only you can decide which route you want to go.

That's exactly what it is Marki , a central server location in the U.S , as is the London location central for Yahoo. Time for that lie down now, but thanks all for trying to assist. :beerjug:
