Hi Guys, I've just joined the 1250 club with a very nice six month old model bought from my local dealership, Clark's in Dundee. Salesman was Ryan Westwater, top guy! Third bike I have got from them, they couldn't be more helpful and gave me a good deal on my 1200.
As you will know, the bike comes with a tracker, not something I want as I am happy with my security arrangements and the bike is liable to be sitting sometimes for a week or so without running or a charger so I don't want a flat battery. Also don't want to pay £110 a year for kit I don't want.
I will be fitting all my bits and pieces from my old 1200 onto the new bike, including front and back cameras so I will be removing a lot of panels to do that. It would be a good time to remove the tracker but I don't know where it is, what it looks like and do I just cut and insulate the wires to it? Will it bring up any fault codes?
If anyone can help me, it might be better to PM me with the info, as we don't want any criminal elements having this information!

Leave the tracker alone
If it is currently paid for just let the subscription expire and it becomes de activated

I've recently moved my tracker as it was placed where the alarm goes which is just behind rear light under the silver panel that the rear seat clips onto.

I'm retro fitting the alarm which is now installed and will get coded on Monday.

The tracker is a black bock approx 15cm long 10cm wide and 2cm thick. I moved it towards the front area still under the rear seat and to the left side. It's wired in to the main loom which goes to the alarm when fitted and the TPMS box. Just cutting the wires will not be a good idea as it will probably throw a warning code.

I also have the Denali CanSmart installed so its a bit tight for room now but careful planning and a sensible approach to how you move the cables about and you should be ok.

I doubt there would be enough room for the camera box under rear seat as well. I had my camera system on top of the ECU under riders seat. It was very snug but I have my seat set at High at front and low at rear. If you have the front in the low position I doubt it will fit. As for other nooks and crannies Potentially if you have the small lithium ion battery sitting on top of a spacer block you might be able to put it there. Also lifting the tank might show up a suitable space albeit very inaccessible.

Thanks for the dimensions of the tracker I now know what to look for on my 6 month old RS. Does it have any markings on it?
The dealer has told me that on the RS it might be in the tail or it might be behind the airbox.

It has either datatool or Scorpion Tracking written on it

Redrick, I didn't want the tracker to flatten my battery if it was sitting for a while off charge. Would it still draw current deactivated if I don't pay the subscription? I imagine it will still drain the battery.

I remember reading somewhere that it would take a couple of months to drain battery as it has such a miniscule power draw. its just one red flashing LED on the tracker.

Bike batteries are so piss poor these days ( to be light and small etc) that i reckon you need to keep it on optimate regardless of the tracker

I heve not singled out BMW batteries in particular as Ducati are the same but if you look back through the pages on this place you will see no end of battery failures often even on new bikes.

Oh and the Bike trac tracker that comes on the Ducati lets you monitor the battery ( main bike battery) voltage from the App not sure if the BMW version is the same

An interesting one may be the question of insurance if a tracker equipped bike is stolen and the owner has removed said tracking device.
I know that they are not that bothered if a non factory fit tracking device has been removed or not subscribed to , however, if a standard factory fit security device has been removed, disabled or not subscribed to will it give them a get out or excuse for offering less in settlement of a theft claim.
Might be worthwhile getting in writing before removing a tracking device

Hi Neil W,
When I changed over my insurance with the bike change, I was asked if a tracker was fitted. At that time I had no idea one was fitted and said no. So if it was removed, it shouldn't be a problem.

In the event of a claim, especially theft - they might ask BMW for the serial number and if a tracker was fitted by the manufacturer?

I agree, any excuse not to pay out, on my car insurance it clearly states they will not pay out if any security devices are not operating at time of the theft, I cant see bike being different, it is a very general statement my wording is probably not correct but it is along those lines.

I emailed datatool today to ask if the tracker was connected to the battery or had an internal battery connected to an ignition on supply. The reply that I got back indicated that the chap knew nothing about the product and was probably just a salesman.
I have no interest in insurance as my bike is French registered and French insurance companies are not allowed to look for any excuse not to pay out.

Mine is 6 months old with a tracker, didn’t want one but fitted, I left my bike for 2 months over Xmas and started on the button, left another month and started fine again. No charger or trickle charge, I wouldn’t worry about something that might never happen, address it if it becomes an issue

It does have an internal battery

Whilst I was relocating mine I had disconnected the main battery and 5 mins later datatool called me to check everything was ok. I said I was working on bike and had disconnected the battery thinking the internal battery would continue to monitor.

Lady on phone said they are alerted to any sudden power drop as they think someone is trying to remove the tracker to steal the bike

Clever stuff and I’m glad I’ve got it. Just expect a call if you disconnect the main battery without alerting them first.

I find it bizarre you would have the potential security of a tracker on a highly desirable bike worth over 15k, and baulk at paying £110.

Claiming for a full vehicle loss can be a very stressful experience, something you really want to avoid imho.

And very expensive. It is considered as a fault claim, regardless of protected no claims etc.

I contacted Datatool today, they are going to register me for the remaining six months that are paid for. As it appears that it doesn't flatten a battery in a few days, I'll keep it. Guess I was missinformed about it's power consumption.

I have the datatool tracker on my 1250gs. I can confirm it uses very little battery, probably go a couple of months without flatning the battery. My bike was stolen from a car park in Perpignan, when we stopped for a quick break. I forgot to put on the steering lock and the bastards pushed the bike out of the car park at the rear of the restaurant. Scorpion called me and the bike was recovered with no damage within 40 mins, thanks to the police and a local.
