I personally have one of the following fitted and although I have never had my bike stolen I am aware that a number of his clients have had attempted thefts or thefts that the device has then lead to recovery. it is provided with a CO-OP Mobile sim. They charge 2.5p per text so 250 for £10 which is the minimum top up available.

It doesn't appear that this company provides any assistance with police liaison and bike recovery. If not, it is still up to you to track the bike and find out its location if/when it stops moving, at which point you have to find a way to get credible and detailed location info to the relevant police force, and persuade them to attempt a recovery. Since they may need a warrant they would need a high level of confidence in you and the location data you are able to provide. Given this, it may be quite difficult for Mr Joe Public to convince them to take any action, compared to companies like BikeTrac, with whom they have an existing and ongoing relationship. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I would be doubtful about taking this on myself.
