Putting a bike on the train
Hi,
a few years ago we rode to the South of France and then loaded them on the train for the journey back.
There will be those who suggest that this is the wimps way, but riding a 748 at the time it worked really well for us. The riding gets better the further you go south (generally), and it saves a long haul back through France on the Autoroute.
We loaded the bike on the train in Nice in exactly the same way that you do with a car, they strap it down like you would do on the ferry. The sleeper then goes overnight to Calias. You get up and ride the bike a short way to the ferry.
You can then chill with a bottle of wine in a sleeper compartment while the train trundles north through the night.
Overall excellent, one tip however.
Check the tickets carefully. Once on the train we were told that we had a ticket for a bike to travel but not a ticket for the train, though we had clearly paid for both.
Common sense prevailed, but clearly it would be best to avoid this sort of stress.
