Training to become a CBT instructor / trainer /coach

Mike around our area may be slightly different , i dont live far from Simon and dont know what school he has been to so cant comment on it, but around this area schools are very cash greedy, they do not like to take money on card if they can help it ( I dont understand this;););)) they also have this idea that if you turn up and the student does not, then it is ok for you not to be paid. and they would certainly not pay another instructor to be a the stooge and teach when no students are there to pay for there training.
Trust me when i say this as i have experienced most of the pit falls of this and its not good, there are 1 or 2 decent schools in the area and thats about it.
You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned business practices, there are many times i have refused to do certain things that have been asked of me, and the only reason i get away with it is because there are very few instructors around this area ( a shortage ) so there is little chance of a replacement.

seems very short sighted to treat your staff like shit when there is a shortage in that sector

sadly, all too common in the UK. Staff retention, or lack thereof, was very familiar at my last employer. 11 years, 17 different managers and only 2 of those were from me changing to a different role. Clerks lasted about 3 months before they realised wages and benefits were better at Sainsbury's. So much for local authority workers being cosseted in an ass's milk bath followed by a snooze under a duck down duvet on a Tempura mattress from 0900 to 1700.

Wessie it is all down to the person who owns the school and what type of person they are, me as an instructor would be willing to and have done the job at cost on occasions, the problem lies with the amount of cash that is comming through the door or how much you can insist on comming through, the job breeds greed no two ways about it and that is the issue.

What concerns me with this Si is the school did not use this as an opportunity to train you 1 on 1. Regardless of the student not turning up, you were there and so was their instructor. They should have used the training pad and 125 bike to go through delivering the exercises in Element A, B and C, the instructor could have acted as a student and got you to deliver to him and then deliberately throw in faults for you to identify, this is how we train instructors. This was an opportunity lost and on our telephone conversation I did point out that training you should not just be a case of you watching an instructor delivering a CBT, they should be putting more effort in with you. You should demand more for the money you are paying them. If I were you I'd have a chat with the ATB owner and assert that you want to be trained and not just be expected to watch other instructors, that is a lazy way of doing it and you are actually training yourself.

Does the ATB charge students up front? At our school all training is paid for before the training starts, if someone is a no-show then they lose their money unless they are ill and produce a doctor's note. If they pay on the day then it makes it easy for students to just not bother if they decide the weather is a bit iffy or they had a few beers the night before. The school and the instructor lose money. If that is the way they operate then they should change their business model. After all, if a person is sent on a training course from work or goes on a college course then the fees are paid up front. Motorbike training is no different, unless they specifically want cash payments so it doesn't go into the books - if so then your alarm bells should be ringing regarding their business practices I'm afraid.
They only have one instructor who can train me. The one who was there that morning said I wasn't even allowed on the pad while he was training, so I couldn't even learn off him. Communication is not the best.

That would possibly be because the instructor was only down trained and can not train others because of this.

I can only hope that things improve for you Si.

I know Kevin Bryan, his training centre is at Stoke City ground, he's a good guy, say hello to him for me.
Back in on Tuesday for the next round of proper tuition and pointers. Will do. I saw Nick yesterday, who suggested them as his wife, Trish, is the central hub that keeps it all going!

I recognise it. Kev used to be a BMW authorised training centre; a couple of years ago BMW were courting us to become their central region training centre. That's how we got to know Kev as we visited his site and discussed the pros and cons of being under BMW control. In the end we turned them down as we would have lost control of the business; Kev has since binned BMW for the same reason and is now Triumph.

They are a good set up with high standards and I am pleased that you will now get the proper training that you deserve. As you know when we had our chat on the phone I was dubious about the first place you went to; sadly my misgivings have been proven correct but things should go well for you now so it has turned out for the best.
