Trans-Canada?

Been invited on an eight-week Trans-Canada ride next year. East to West, Montreal to Vancouver, taking in Labrador and Newfoundland at the start.

Anybody done it and was it worthwhile?

Done half of it from Ontario to St Johns in one February, so loads of snow, which is why I went in February.

I should imagine it is brilliant in Summer, the country is stunningly beautiful...I did it a long time back and in a PT Cruiser....Loads of moments and covered bridges when you get off the main highways, good food, lodgings were always good, people lovely.

I cannot see how anyone would not enjoy it.

These moments have to be grasped with both hands, take it, do it....You will never forget it.

My maternal grandfather did in the mid-to-late1920’s, returning from Japan. The internet (and indeed much of Japan) was not known then. He went the other way though.

I’ve driven some of the trans Canadian highway in Ontario.

It’s a big, two lane highway with loads of heavy trucks, mostly running through woodland and a whole load of small towns.

Most of Canada is like Ontario - flat.

We did most of that in 2015. Didn’t do the East coast bit, but did do Montreal > BC > Alaska > ferry back to USA near Vancouver then back across USA to Montreal. Did all that in 14 weeks. I’ve a ride report on another forum somewhere. There’s lots of flat straight roads across Canada but as you are seeing and experiencing it all for the first time so it’s not boring. 8 weeks seems like plenty time for it.

Most of Canada is like Ontario - flat.

There will be no obligation to ride tarmac. I’m told there are lots of dirt trails alongside the fields in the flat parts. Deffo flat in the middle though

Me and my Mrs rode our F800GSs across Canada back in 2019 as part of our extended trip.
Very much worthwhile and 8 weeks will give plenty of time to avoid a lot of the ‘big’ roads.

After heading up to Alaska from Houston TX via Vancouver Island and lots of other places we turned around at Homer and headed for Halifax.

If you want to and can afford it, do it. It’ll be great. We don’t regret anything from our trip, even the shit bits.

Some thirty years back I drove from Edmonton to Vancouver and back. Stunning scenery, the roads were not stupid busy,and the people are lovely.

Since then, Jasper was burnt down by forest fires, but I guess they’ll rebuild it.

Vancouver is good.

Lots of miles after miles in the middle! Head east young man - Cabot trail and maybe dip into up state New York. Even that would be a lot of miles but interesting miles!

So far Jasper, Banff, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon are the furthest east I've made it.
Curious to what your plan is far as getting a ride, you shipping your bike. I don't think anyone currently rents one way. AC used to fly bikes into Montreal but I think the quit after covid.

Shipping bikes in. Seven weeks too expensive to rent, even if you could find a one-way option...

The only rental option would be Eagle Rider and teh last thing you would want to ride is some underpowered piece of American junk

Shipping into Halifax and flying back from Vancouver could be your cheapest option.
