You may recall that i have had a noise that sounded like a dry bearing in the final drive. It started at 300 miles and i havenot had any luck having it sorted. Anyway i mentioned it to the BMW technical guy - Steve, at the motor show in Birmingham last month. He said he would look at the bike next time he was in the area.

He actually made a special trip, took the bike out for a good run, came back & vanished into the workshops. Reappeared after an hour & took off again. when he reappeared he said that there definately had been a noise & they had tracked it down to a faulty rear tyre. They had checked everything including running the bike in gear on the bench & listening with e stethoscope. Eventually they swapped the rear wheel with one off a demo bike & the noise was not there on the road test. As tyres are not covered under the BMW warranty he had to get BMW to agree to replace the tyre. in fact they have done better than this & replaced BOTH tyres with new Metzlers. The bike previously had Michelins. On the ride home the noise was definately not there. I will of course be monitoring it as it did not appear initially until about 300 miles. To say that i am amazed would be an undersatement as i was convinced that it was mechanical. I am delighted not to have the bike taken to pieces, and thumbs up to Steve from BMW & the boys at Mill :thumb :beerjug:

Great news. Tyres eh, I've always had a good run with Tourances.

Hi Beemerman,

I had exactly the same noise and reported it to BMW on 8th October this year. 6 weeks later (November 15th) I met Howard Godolphin at CW's in Dorchester and after taking my bike for a long ride he announced that the rear tyre was causing the noise. I was not offered a replacement but he suggested to Darren at CW's that he quote me ' a good price' for a new one. They were also to order a new right handlebar switch unit (due to a sticking starter button) and arrange for this to be fitted, at the same time stripping the starter motor and inspecting it for wear/damage. They were to call me the next day. To date I have heard nothing back from them. :spitfire

For a top dealer their service I feel is sadly lacking and I sometimes wish I had bought elsewhere. It was only their reputaion that led me to them but I have yet to experience any of this magic service. In fact, when I went to collect the bike their salesman (who was expecting me) kept us waiting for over 1 1/2 hours before we could pay him! :spitfire

What interests me though with regard to your tyres is how many miles in total had you done on them before they were eventually replaced?

Thanks,

Andy

Humbug should drop in to Ocean sometime, pretty friendly bunch down there and working hard to top CW's in the South West. IMHO :thumb

Hi Humbug, the tyres had done 2000 miles before they were replaced. Having said that I reported it to Mill at the first 600 mile service. Mill really were`nt all that interested in fixing it (you know the usual `they all do that & its not that bad, better let it develop` crap. i feel that if i had not whinged at the BMW rep at the bike show, nothing would have been done.
