Well, I sourced a used ZFE the same as mine and it solved nothing! I'm starting to think it maybe a chaffed wire in the headstock somewhere but where?

Does anyone know what the two yellow relay type things are behind the motronics unit? Are they anything to do with the switchgear and what else is there that has anything to do with the switchgear.

I am at a complete loss now and can't believe that this has rendered the bike scrap as the MOT runs out soon and there's a two month wait for BMW diagnostics.

Simon, have a look here…if that’s any help ?

85-87b open circuit relay? Doesn’t give any colours…all other relays I can see are flasher and starter relay

was the VO in the new ZFE the same - if it isn't it wont behave - the Vehicle Order (VO) list in the Kombi, the DME and the ZFE must align for all the canbus madness to cope, or features wont do what they are meant too

it is possible if the donor bike was identical it should work correctly - or, if very close specification between bikes most stuff might behave...

but as an RT with cruise, a K13GT with an electric screen and GSA with ESA can use the same module - the coding inside varies between the various ZFE High modules
and a non ESA GS would have one of the large connector plugs missing (J2) - on its ZFE Basic - which can be also be a Basic Low or Basic High where it got a trip meter or not....

however even here that won't be totally straightforward... whilst I suspect for given year's the module hardware between each of the three ZFE variants could be coded to suit other bike models (say K13 module to a GS etc.) - that will only be a thing - where the software version its flashed with at present, is suitable - and as yet outside special features hidden within old dealer kit most of use don't have / know how to use / don't have the multiplexer comms kit to try, you'll not be able to flash the correct software itertation to the replacement module - so coding choices won't be available - kids do it all day long on the cars - they even put the bike software up on their servers for use - but we simple bikers are 15 years behind the times

using a RED GS911 you can back up the coding on a module - (you can't see it, they do it in the background)... and can try to reload it - whether that works for a replacement module I expect so, but can't confirm, never tried

re software - for the old air cooled GS and RT models and the K1300s there was nothing newer than what's in the K24 folder of the V66 daten release

I'll send you a wiring diagram when i get home

Do a search for " its F*cked or the lemon" you'll see the headstock wiring and the issues caused

Thanks Botus, you are far beyond my capabilities I'm afraid but thank you. :blast

Santa, I'll do that in the morning. (y)
