Travel to Spain (via France) on a cheap

Agreed. If the aimis to get to the Picos quickly and with least drama, long ferry every time.

When I’ve done the maths I recon it’s almost break even with tyre wear , gas, hotels etc.

And you can save money by sitting in a seat for 30 hours ! Who needs a cabin ? I read it a few posts above !
We’ll be slumming it on the Plymouth-Santander in less than two weeks

If I went to Spain again I would ride down from Rotterdam. Never again I will ride to Portsmouth and get on that boring ferry.
Makes sense .
You got the ferry to Rotterdam to ride 500 miles to explore 20 miles of Brittany so makes sense to ride 1000 miles each way to get to your intended area 😜

We’re all different but I love the Pont Aven ferry to Santander .
Doc, think you were on a smaller ferry from Portsmouth .
Used to be the Cap Finistere which was fabulous but that’s been retired .

But I love the Plymouth-Santander on the fleet flagship
Ride over Dartmoor, lunch at Pier One then mini cruise to Santander . Just the perfect start to a holiday .

Unless you’re sat in a seat for 30 hours , eating the sarnies you made yesterday 😜

:D

Just came back from Santander yesterday evening.
My third time using the Ferry since just before covid. I'm not the most cost-attentive traveler, but I regularly ride/drive quite a lot across Europe and I find the cost of the ferry extremely good.
3 of us traveling together and it costed us around 500 quid per person/bike both ways.

That's definitely cheaper than taking the eurotunnel and driving through France (done that on the same route a few times) + one night hotel, and also saves you squared tyres in most cases.
For me: no brainer.

I preferred pre-covid when both the trips were around 24 hours... but I don't really mind the full day on the boat on the way down. For me it's a way to wind-down, read a book and relax (or sleep) as there is absolutely fucking nothing you can (or have to) do. Therapeutic.

I'm considering doing a car trip (some of those roads are amazing) soonish. Haven't checked how much the price hike is on 4 wheels.

Cruise my arse. Its a feckin ferry.
Spain was nice but won't be rushing to go back.
That’s because you got the wrong ferry 🤦‍♂️.
The Pont Aven is much bigger and has a choice of bars , restaurants, live music , cabaret show, cinema etc etc

You were probably on the Salamanca which does the Portsmouth route

This is the Pont Aven which does the Plymouth

But you’d probably still hate it if you were up at 0330. But they probably let you tidy up the toilets and give a couple of cabins a lick of paint 😆🤓

I enjoy the sail on Pont Aven, far more than riding through France anyway, going again in a few weeks.
Has anyone been on it this season yet? It was supposed to be in for a bit of a refurb over winter, swimming pool going and self service restaurant alterations/removal, not sure which, if any, happened?

20th for us, dump gear in cabin, get a pint then queue to book the a la carte restaurant (y)
I wish they'd let you book in advance for that, without booking a Commodore suite!

Portsmouth to Santander return.
2 nights in double cabin.
Departed 10pm & arrive 8 am (+1 day)
7.5m campervan

£1200

Bloomin’ boring ferry

Hull ferry on Thursday with return a couple of weeks later. Two people, double cabin each way, dinner and breakfast each way, 7.4m motorhome was about £850. Even if it was the £1200 you have paid it’s better than driving down and back up through England.

Not been on the Spain ferries for many many years but we used to send a pillion on ahead to book the restaurant as soon as they started to load vehicles. Not sure the ferry staff would be so amenable these days!

(I also seem to remember in those past times that there was a photographer who used to take photos of boarding bikes & cars and would post them up on the ferry for sale.)

Same here .
But I get asked what time we’d like dinner 😜
