Travel to Spain (via France) on a cheap

It might be interesting to see:

A. The non-vegetarian menu pages

B. The wine list

As to the rest? Go whatever way suits you best at any one moment in time.
Can’t be that interesting as that was posted nearly a year ago

Welcome onboard to UKGser, especially folks from Spain.
👍👍

The forum really has a peculiar way, you need a sense of humour, and once you get it’s drift (and you aren’t too easily offended) you’ll be hooked, many folks have been here 20 odd years.

Apologies for not posting about the thread topic! 😜

Well i can call bullshit on the timings

Ive done the run to Dieppe to Bordox even using the Peage takes more than 8 hrs

Thats googles non stop traveling at 80mph from the off

Stop for fuel, add 15- 30 mins each stop , lunch 30-45 mins

Your looking at 9.5hrs minimum

This tool in this thread gives an interesting cost analysis for varying options fir crossing the seas around England to get to France and Europe. May not be exact and motorhome based, but helps quantify it the thrashing it down saves thousands of pounds but kills the will to live: https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/motorhome-drive-or-ferry-to-spain/

Not really useful if one doesn’t live in the south of England. We use the Hull-Rotterdam ferry. A much better, less stressful journey.

As the thread was brought to back to life, it seemed opportune.

Hey ho.
Well if you’re that desperate, we stayed at the Pousada de Bragança.
Lovely hotel but rather silly priced menu . Think it was Michelin starred .
We just had a plate of pasta each from memory but the set tasting menu was something like €150 per person .

Probably not relevant to many Tossers apart from those that splash six figures on a camper van 😜

Edited to add.

Here we go

All the menus . Go try the Nadir Afonso menu. It’s only €205 per person . And the matching wine pairing is only €95.
Be sure to let us know how you get on . 😜

Riding down south to Plymouth whilst a bit of a drag, is offset by the excitement and enthusiasm of the start of the trip. A trifling inconvenience . Less than 24 hours and you're in Spain, fresh as a daisy, fresh tyres, fresh hard boiled eggs and pork pie still. Just a no brainer to me.
It's the ride back from the South coast to oop north that's the killer. But, no pain, no gain as they say, or the early bird shouldn't throw stones or something like that.
Anyway, it's all been said before. Each to their own, you pays your money to a blind horse.

As far as I can tell it assumes a 80 miles journey to the port, so all you have to do is take 80 miles of fuel off the distance to the port you're looking at.
Living in Aberdeen I'm much happier spending a few extra pounds on missing the hell that is English roads below the M62. Even to the point of going through Wales to get to Plymouth.

Exactly .
More tedious for me as I have to get a ferry north to UK just to get an another south again .
I’ve ridden down to Spain many times . Got the ferry about five times. I’ve only got the ferry back once as prefer to ride back via a few fave stops .
But that’s the way I’ve kind of settled on over the years .Meet the boys in UK, ride to Plymouth, have lunch , catch ferry .Few beers then a nice meal and a catch up with mates I might not have seen for a while .Its always a great start to the trip .
The ferry is what you make it .I love it , as it really is like a mini cruise for me . But I never share a cabin as like my space and I’ve always booked a nicer cabin apart from once when we did it last minute and all they had were inside cabins .
So, yes, it costs a few hundred quid more ,but so what ? It’s a holiday and most places we stay are normally not silly money .And I don’t waste money on stupid £30k bikes with built in toasters. 😜
Share an inside cabin with three others and I can see why some might hate it .It’s what you make of it and how you approach it .Unless you’re Doc and just a miserable cùnt anyway 😜

Never used the ferry preferring to drive down via minor roads, all part of the holiday. I’ve found festivals, village celebrations, closed road classic car races and a Mayor’s birthday I was invited to stay to enjoy. Each to their own but I’ve loved every trip.

Thanks (y), I know the score, though. I'm an ex-member recently rejoined because I changed bike. ;)

…we stayed at the Pousada de Bragança

Thank you.

It looks very nice:

I see there is a big difference in the room rate between booking via an agency (like Booking.com) and the lower rate available through booking direct with the hotel.

On jaunts, I sometimes like to have two or three nights in cheaper accommodation, to then subsidise the cost of a higher end night.

I do the same. Use a pension in some places and then spunk £200 on half board in a Parador
