The thing that I miss most when travelling abroad is listening to my favourite BBC programmes (mainly 4 extra) so I bought a Roberts Record R (£60) and a Music Man speaker (£20) which plays back from the SD/Micro SD card.

In the weeks leading up to my trip I simply set the radio to record whatever plays/documentaries I fancy and then sit back and enjoy :D

There may be an easier way but I couldn't find it.

Downside is having to convert the radio files to MP3 format (using a free convertor) but this only takes a couple of minutes per programme. The other issue is not having a menu display on the Music Man but I'll live with that rather than having to lug the radio about everywhere. I guess any device that plays from cards could be used but the little Music Man is a fantastic speaker for the money.

If you have an iPad you could download one of the radio app's, then stream in live radio over wifi near enough anywhere in the world.

I tried to use the BBC's app for Radio 4 extra (my preferred channel) but denied access, possibly because it's a DAB-only station :nenau

Also, this lets me listen to, for example, the Sherlock Holmes series whenever I want.

You probably need to try an alternative app; the BBC's is restricted by licensing issues, quite separate to the original broadcast being digitally encoded.

Try Tunein radio, which will also record. It's currently streaming Dad's Army on Radio 4 Extra. I think you could listen to it right now in Tokyo or Lisbon.

There used to be a ripper programme for radio 4, you could schedule it on your PC and it will automatically rip a programme to MP3. Alas when I returned to it there was a notice saying that it had been removed at the (legal?) request of the BBC.
