Had a test ride on a 990 Adventure today. Verdict: brilliant bike ruined by one major flaw.

I've had GS's for the last six years, tried the 1200 and didn't like it so thought I would have a look at the competition.

The KTM is a really nice bike, but low-speed snatchiness caused by (I think) the fuel injection make it a real pig to ride in town.

Trying to run with a fixed throttle between 20 and 40 in second or third had it lurching back and forth. Not the most relaxing way to tackle wet, diesel-slippy roundabouts! In fact I had to resort to slipping the clutch on a couple of tight ones.

Get it on the open road and it's fine. The handling is much sharper than the BM's, the engine is a revvy, punchy delight, the gearchange something we GS owners can only dream about, wind protection as good as my current bike, and the mirrors bigger and clearer.

The ABS worked fine, you really have to provoke the bike to get it to activate, even in the wet you have to pull on a sudden whopping handfull of front brake. It's a bit different to the GS because you get fork dive under braking, and as the ABS cuts in the forks rebound big time. Bit of a surprise if you've got used to Telelever handling.

Even the seat height wasn't the problem I thought it would be for my puny 29-inch inside leg. The bike's so much lighter than a GS1150 that stretching a toe down isn't too hard.

I really wanted to like it and was trying to find reasons why I should buy one, but that fuel injection would be impossible to live with. I do a fair chunk of riding in central London where it would be a damn nuisance.

The dealer wasn't surprised at my reaction. When he asked me what I thought I told him it was a brilliant bike ruined by one thing. Straightaway he said: "A snatchy throttle?". Seems I'm not the first to complain. He said KTM have no current plans to remap the ECU. Wonder if they're taking the same "Head in the sand" approach to it as BMW are with their servo brakes?

Ah well, I was expecting to put the GS in the "For Sale" section today. Looks like I'll be staying with you lot after all. On the bright side, this website and its members are still the best around by miles.

Premier Bikes in Didcot (01235 519195) brought 5 unsold new 950's in from Europe and were selling them complete with panniers, tank bag and rally bars for £7995 otr though they may have all gone by now :nenau

I was there last Saturday and they certainly had some used 950's and new 990's for sale :thumb

The snatchyness of the 990 can be cured by fitting Akropovic pipes and a remap though at £650 that's a costly addition to a floored £8695 bike :nono

But! But! MCN says they're the bollix!!

The snatchy EFI is a well documented problem with the new 'un. I've seen a few VERY nice 950's (old tat according to MCN) with the later (and lower, more comfy) gel seat fitted. Look on Biketrader as I remember there was a very nice 2005 one with KTM luggage on it for under 6K.

EDIT - Just had a look, someone's bought it. It had a centre stand too :(

I bought one of Premier's new 950s from that batch, picked it up 3 weeks ago. The deal with the panniers and stuff was too good to miss. (FWIW I really like Premier, even though it's a bit of a trek for me to get there—they really seemed to know their stuff.)

Totally agree with comments about the 990 fuelling - a nice bike spoiled, especially in traffic and pottering along country B roads. I had test-ridden both the 990 and 950 before making my decision and the 950 won it hands down. The various KTM dealers I spoke to all agreed with the snatchy 990 issue and then started on the new pipes/black box tweaks/dyno sales blah-blah, which is taking the pish to 'sort' a brand new bike.

However, I'm happy as a very happy thing with my 950. Light, powerful and fun after 5 years of beemer R-series 1100/1150s. I did look at a 1200, which I'm sure is a fine bike, but it has never done it for me and the £10k-ish price with luggage and all was a bit steep.

Better the devil you know

I agree with most of the above comments, having tried the 950 KTM which was a real hoot to ride and very fast i then tried a 990. What a disappointment, it was snatchy on the throttle and looked cheaply put together despite some of the high grade components. Decided my current GS1200 was better overall than either KTM and it won't cost me anything.
I also tried the new GSA1200 which i liked but is far too pricey at nearly £13k fully loaded.

I have the 990 and although the bike had plenty of grunt and great suspension, the EFI snatch (even with new fuel mapping) is terrible. Actually, I am in 2 minds whether or not to jump on a 1150ADV :nenau ...

I had the 990, too. Lovely to ride...until you have to finesse the throttle. Which is beyond irritating in the wet and off-road. Snatchy and not a patch on the 950s (Adventure and Supermoto).
Apparently it gets better with a PC, but that's no excuse really. And you have to pay £400 for the first service (valves).
I've got an 1150 now. I bought one after a 2200 miles trek through South America last year - it was spot on (100mph on dirt!*).

*Indicated...two-up.

Owners who have added the Akras have reported that the snatchiness is gone once the new FI map, specific to the Akras, is uploaded.

Well, get a 2005 model with carbs.

I too tested a 990 and decided I couldn't live with the snatchy response.

Tested a 950 and loved it, best fuelling on any bike I've had (those that I remember anyway).

Mine came from Bath Road with 420 miles on it, guy who bought it didn't like it.

Bought a top box/bracket from Premier, Darren very amenable guy to deal with.

Shame Touratech delivery is so C*AP.

Will post some pictures when I get round to it.
