I'm planning a trip to include the August Bank Holiday.
Just to be different (and to avoid London lol) I'm going to Harwich to Holland (overnight)
I'm gonna wing it like those YouTubers (pick any one lol) with a mix of camping and hotels. I'll work it out by the day.
There are places I want to visit anyway. I ski/snowboard, so I want to see them without snow lol. These may (or not) include
  • Stelvio Pass
  • Davos
  • Eagles Nest
This covers about 5/6 days so I've got two(ish) days of nothingness except riding

It's my first day of planning, but this is the route I have so far. Looking for advice and suggestions. This will be my first EU trip (weather dependent)

Thanks all :D

Are you inviting people to join you?

If so you probably need to say where and when. A hint as to the return date might be handy, too.

:beerjug:

PS If the post is accidentally in the wrong place (it happens) it can be moved.

Hi @djgsa - is this a trip invite or just a request for information and advice?

It could be of interest. Cheers

Interesting, quite a lot of ground to cover in 5/6 days of I've misunderstood... happens often

Your screen shot says it’s 3,000 km, which is 1,800 miles.

It’’s not very clear what this means:

This covers about 5/6 days so I've got two(ish) days of nothingness except riding

However, if it means it’s a six day trip, front door to front door, that’s a daily average mileage of 300 miles, each day every day. Doable? Yes. Necessarily fun, if your intention is to stop to see things and do ‘stuff’ along the way? Maybe not so much.

A bit of both to be honest. Other that fiesch davos and eagles nest. It's whatever looks interesting along the way. Or maybe get the drone out

I need to sit down and look at the details of where to stop.

I'll be taking my tent and winging it. I've got the ferry boot but that's all. It will be a mix of camping or b&b.

300miles a day is ok . If it pushes to 400 that's doable. With stops I can do 1.5 to 2hours before numb numb kicks in

I didn't know which forum so if admins want to move it that's fine with me. I'll post dates later

I was planning to do something like this but over 10 days. If the bike stays, I'll probably still do one.

Was going to do the furka and grimsel pass.

If you are inviting bods to join you, it’s in the right place.

If you are not, it can be quickly and painlessly moved.

I’m sure you know this already, but off the autoroutes average moving speed will be around 40mph, as most roads in France now have an 80kph limit and lots of speed cameras, and all the small towns and villages are 30kph through town with some pretty effective speed control.

300 miles on the autoroutes is as you say very doable, and may be a good option if you just want to get to eagles nest.

Some long days there mate.

Just go and see how it goes.

Don’t over plan, it won’t survive contact with the weather, roads, traffic, your ass, etc etc.

Plenty of other ‘good targets’ not as far away.

Either way it’ll be great.

Well I was in Ireland last week for 6 days
Apart from one day off I was out 7+ hours each day riding around Kerry and south
Stopped and got off the bike every 1½ to 2 hours, give my bum a break :D
So am going to apply the same logic here

A bit more concrete to the plan. (Still very much a work in progress) I have 10 days scheduled, not 8 as I previously thought.

This is what I have kinda worked out so far. Ferries are booked.
I've plenty of time. I think riding time can be as long/short as I like. I'm in no rush to be anywhere lol.
Day 6 heads back toward home. I'm wondering if folk have any ideas where to go or what to see.
I've got some time on my hands, so I will do some googling and fill in the blanks over the next few days and weeks.
I've got to find campsites/hotels along the way, so this is far from the final plan.
  • Out - Friday 28th August 2026 Ferry 23:00 from Harwich to Hook of Holland 06:30 (Stenaline)
  1. Sat 29th To Belgium/Gemany
  2. Sun 30th To Fiesch/Switzerland
  3. Mon 31st then on to Davos/Switzerland (950km)
  4. Tue 1st To Stelvio Pass (Not sure yet) (280km)
  5. Wed 2nd To Waidring/Austria, then on to Eagle's Nest Austria/German border (60km)
  6. Thu 3rd - TO DO
  7. Fri 4th - TO DO
  8. Sat 5th - TO DO
  • Return - Sunday 6th September 2026 Ferry 22:00 from Hook of Holland to Harwich 06:30 (Stenaline)
The last 4 days on a straight run are about 150 miles a day, so lots of flexibility to do things along the way.
I was going to do this alone, hence the call for ideas. But if anyone wants to tag along, you are most welcome; I don't mind at all.

==============

Hence the move from the ‘Open invites’ section.

I’ve just got home having done that crossing,in the car. Getting off the ferry and through the EES took fekkin ages, it was incredibly slow. Coming back last night and this morning going through passport control a lot quicker.

Whilst some eighteen years old, this sticky guide to presenting ‘Open invite’ trips is not bad:

In essence, you have to ‘sell’ the plan to potential punters (who you very probably won’t know and visa-versa) to let them know what to expect. If they find out that day whatever is to be 1,000 km on motorways (or on every goat track known to man, leaving at 06:00 sharp) there might - understandably - be some disgruntled soldiers in the ranks. Mutiny is best avoided.

Awesome advice, thank you. I'll update the posting is a few days when I have some more details. This was literally just to get idea's for me but if folk want to come along that would be awesome.

I did these over eight days about 3 weeks ago.
Rotterdam to Freiburg was too much. 470 miles in one day to get to the fun stuff missed out some nice things. It was fast as hell too - not my style. Got as far as Lake Como to then do San Marco. 1 day rained off.

I have a ride report to do..I know...I know.

In order....

Grimsel Pass
Furka Pass
OberAlp Pass
Fluela Pass
OfenPass
Umbrail Pass
Stelvio Pass
Gavia Pass
San Marco Pass
Gothard Pass
Susten Pass

If I can help...let me know.
