Trip August 2026 - Stelvio Pass, Davos, Eagles Nest

I did these over eight days about 3 weeks ago.
Rotterdam to Freiburg was too much. 470 miles in one day to get to the fun stuff missed out some nice things. It was fast as hell too - not my style. Got as far as Lake Como to then do San Marco. 1 day rained off.

I have a ride report to do..I know...I know.

In order....

Grimsel Pass
Furka Pass
OberAlp Pass
Fluela Pass
OfenPass
Umbrail Pass
Stelvio Pass
Gavia Pass
San Marco Pass
Gothard Pass
Susten Pass

If I can help...let me know.
Oh I will absolutely be picking your brains :D

Do you mind sharing your route please? Furka and grimsel are on my list :D

Eagles nest needs half a day to be enjoyed.... not good if you plan to do 300 miles in half a day?

You park up at the bottom and get a bus ticket (unless walking) its the best way up. The electric buses are powerful feckers and fly up very regular.

Once off the bus you walk through the famous entrance and to the gold (brass) lift to the top.
Walk around inside and outside for a while and then go back down the way you came and back to waiting bus.

As already said, to easily do 300 miles a day you need to be on autobahns, not the scenic route.
Whizz out and autobahn it, to see what you need too then try and do a bit of scenic on the way back, if you feel you need to make up time you always have the back on the autobahn option.

Oh I will absolutely be picking your brains :D
I need to write my ride report. Oh how the waitress rested her boobs on the bar with head in hands when I stated, ‘ I use my front brake on the downhill hairpins.’ It all then kicked off!

I’ve only looked at days one and two of your itinerary.

Sat 29th Hook of Holland “to somewhere in Belgium or Germany”.

Sunday 30th from “somewhere in Belgium or Germany” to Fiesch in Switzerland.

That is 1,000 km (620 miles) no matter which way you chop it. Your boat lands at 06:30 on Saturday morning, so let’s assume you can be on your way within the hour ie. 07:30.

If you split the 620 miles into two equal portions, that is 310 miles a day. I’d aim for somewhere around Nancy, France. Nancy is about 500 km (300 miles) from the Hook of Holland and / or roughly halfway between the Hook of Holland and Fiesch.

What roads you take from the Hook of Holland to Nancy and then on to Fiesch, is up to you. It’ll be dictated as much by what time you’d like to be arriving for your overnight stay and what time you’d like to be in Fiesch. Whichever way you chose to get to Nancy (a city, so plenty of choice where to stay in the place or on the outskirts) I’d probably look at clearing Holland to say, the middle part of Belgium, by motorway. In other words, motorway from getting off the boat to a line drawn a bit south of Liège in Belgium.

From Nancy, you could create yourself a pretty good route to say, Colmar / Mulhouse. From there, I’d maybe look at the fastest way to get to Fiesch in Switzerland. Again, it all depends on your view of 300 miles, your departure time, how often you stop during the day (and for how long each time) and what time you’d like to arrive at your final destination of Fiesch.

PS If you stop just before or after Nancy, I’d advise taking the motorway past the city. It can get snarled up.

I have edited the opening post’s header, deleting the somewhat open ‘EU’ reference, replacing it with the three main ‘target’ locations.

How do you get the distance of 950 km (600 miles) between Fiesch and Davos?
A really rough google distance like I say I've only roughed out a plan. The places I've said I want to see I know from my skiing holidays and always said I would go and see them in the summer. Honestly any advice on other places to go and see along the way are most welcome. I am a bit clueless tbh so all suggestions welcomed. I've go a weekend at home this weekend so I shall do some proper planning :)

I was thinking of skipping France and taking in the Black Forest. Time isnt a factor at all. I plkan to wing it and worry about end of the day stop once I got bored or landed somewhere useful, whatever time of day it happens to be. Then get the phone out and find a campsite or bokking.com. I've seen quite a few youtubers do it so I thought I would give it a go

I’m still at a loss as to how - in post #13 - you can turn Fiesch to Davos (roughly 200 km or 125 miles) into a day’s ride of 950 km or, near enough 600 miles? Presumably you plan on visiting every ski station between the two, all in a day?

You are asking for advice, with seemingly little more than a list of places and an indistinct idea of how you’ll join them up. Then, you ask for more places to mix in or, presumably, possibly replace the places you’d planned on seeing. I’m all for suck it and see adventures, with no distinct plan. But, this holiday seems to be taking it to an advanced level. Maybe come back to us when you’ve crystallised your thoughts a bit more?

PS Your plan seems to have been a while gestating. I thought it rang a vague bell:

I’ve just got home having done that crossing,in the car. Getting off the ferry and through the EES took fekkin ages, it was incredibly slow. Coming back last night and this morning going through passport control a lot quicker.
I have just been to Spain. Via Barcelona…painless.
Sunday eve Portsmouth on the the GS, Monday morning arrived St Malo ( Picos Thursday..)
You know what? Painless. No difference in time to previous years, with/without brexit …or the recent ‘changes’.

Crack on travellers.
Biggest ever delay was ten years ago. Where? UK. At Newcastle returning from Holland on dFDS ferry. Not enough staff.

At peak times…everywhere will be busy. Nothing to do with MSM bullshit.

Here you go:

3,100 km or 2,000 miles.

Let’s break the 2,000 miles down day-by-day:

Hook of Holland > Black Forest > Feist > Davos (I didn’t even try to make Feist to Davos 600 miles) > Stelvio > Waidring > Eagles Nest > Hook of Holland.

Sat 29th To Belgium/Gemany - I’d suggest somewhere halfway between the Hook of Holland and Fiesch, which alone is 1,200 km or 750 miles. Let’s say stopping overnight at Kaiserslautern, by way of example only. That is 580 km / 360 miles.

Sun 30th Kaiserslautern to Liesch, Switzerland, via the Black Forest. That is 600 km / 375 miles.

Mon 31st Fiesch, Switzerland on to Davos, Switzerland - At most this is 200 km / 125 miles. I have no idea how you plan on making this 950 km / 600 miles.

Tue 1st Davos To Waidring, Austria via the Stelvio. I make that 450 km / 300 miles.

Wed 2nd Waidring, Austria, then on to Eagle's Nest Austria/German border (60km) - Agree on this distance of 60 km / 40 miles. This gives a full day at the Eagle’s Nest which, as it’s August may well be busy with tourists.

Thursday through to catching the boat at the Hook of Holland on Saturday night. It’s 1,200 km / 750 miles over three days, which is 250 miles a day. I’d suggest, something along the lines of:

Thursday: Eagles Nest to say somewhere around Zumhaus 390 km / 250 miles.

Friday: Zumhaus’ish to Koblenz 360 km / 225 miles.

Saturday: Koblenz to Hook of Holland 460 km / 280 miles.

I suggested Koblenz, simply as it’s a nice city to spend your last night on tour. It’s also near enough the right distance from the Hook of Holland for your last full day.

Total distance Hook of Holland to Hook of Holland, taking in all your ‘must do’ locations and including the Black Forest is 1,955 miles…. Let’s call it 2,000 miles all in, which matches the overall distance given at the start of this post.

Note: That’s avoiding all motorways. You may well find you’ll need to use some, getting out of Holland and into Germany. Likewise on the return. But, you know you, way better than we do, when it comes to roads to ride, daily mileages, start and end times, stopping and doing / seeing ‘stuff’ along the way.

One more tip.

Whilst it’s not infallible, Kurviger’s paid for app (it’s worth it over the free version, if you anticipate doing more trips) is good at breaking down routes. For example, you can ask it to favour motorways between two or more points or exclude motorways entirely and instead favour every twist and turn it can find. It’s also pretty good at answering the appeals of: “Me and my six mates, we want a route of X thousand miles, twisties only, no motorways, leaving Thursday….” pretty quickly.

Why is it not infallible? Very little is, as all route creation tools rely on algorithms. Always check what the clever (but sometimes dumb) app’s kick out by way of a route. 10 minutes spent now, might save 30 minutes or more of shouting at an app on the roadside, when the app can’t hear you. That said, voice recognition and reaction is getting better and better….

Anything else? You can export GPS device friendly GPX routes, though do always check them afterwards. It works on a phone / iPad, which might be handy. Its calculations of routes is pretty quick. You can change the map layer. You can use overlays. In short, tap around; you can’t break it.

Yeah that one never happened. But this one is definately on. I'm going, no excuses, ferry is already booked and paid. So its either this or a spend just over a week in Holland lol :D

You sir are an absolute diamond. Given enough time I'd have eventually come up with something similar (I'd like to think) I will review this evening but that looks to be bob on. Have you ever thought about doing this for money :D

Thank you for that. :) I use MRA route planner. Seems to work similarly. Just load up your routes and go. I use it for my weekend trip planning :)

I use MyRoute for the specifics of route creation, running the final route either through my Garmin XT or through MyRoute’s Navigation app on a sacrificial iPhone. Sometimes, I run both together.

I do though use Kurviger for the ideas / suggestions it puts forward and / or for the ease of dividing routes.

Welcome.

The route is not perfect and certainly needs to be checked, not least as I just bashed it out in Kurviger. But, it’ll do as a reasonable base, at least for mileages between points and (pretty much) the sort of direction you want to take.

Pretty similar to Calimoto. If only I hadn't just resubscribe to Cali for another year 😂

You’re all set.

Loads of advice from some very smart people.

Now……
