Trip report - Operation Clusterfuck

The B roads heading towards the Nürburgring are fab but the weather turns quite nasty and I end up bumbling along forest roads at about 40 trying not to slither around too much on the wet leaves the wind has deposited.

On arrival at the Ring, its changed quite a bit from last time I was here.

Its much more developed with the casino bit hotel etc etc...…...

I have a recall moment of sliding down the track desperately trying to save the plastics on my 916SPS.

My leather took a tanking but the bike remained relatively unscathed.

Now I'm an old fart I think Id save me and let the bike go...….

Its dank and wet so I carry on northwards towards a café I went to years ago where the track crosses the road at Breidscheid.

Sadly this is now developed too with access barriers etc etc so I crack on to Adenau where a photo opportunity jumps out...…………..

As I leave the hills the weather brightens up, morale lifts and I set the GPS to Venlo avoiding motorways.

More German ace B roads make for good progress.

Arnhem tonight shouldn't be a drama at all.

As I get towards the Venlo area a storm decides to empty itself all over me.

I'm sure we've all ridden in poor weather at some time, I can honestly say that this was extremely unpleasant.

Rain so hard it couldn't get any heavier and about a 30 knot crosswind on leafy roads.

Not good.

I have a bit of a thing about stopping whilst soaked, Id rather ride it out and the stop when at least my kit has had a bit of wind to dry off a bit.

On this occasion I dart into a gas station for a bit of respite...…. it has some v happy memories...…..

I don’t know if it shows up well but it was absolutely soaking all round.

A prize for anyone who can name this gas station and why it’s well known...........

Looking North I can see that there is a big demarcation line of weather and decide to crack on to get through it.

Sure enough it clears and the roads are dry, mood lifts again and crack north.

I recon on stopping in Overloon for a coffee, times moving on so probably not enough time for the museum visit.

I may just treat myself to a pair of 40 year old honking Dutch Army socks from the attached Jonny Napalm shop

As I'm pretty much blindly following the GPS it takes me up some fairly small tracks.

At the end of one theres a FBR with a ferry crossing.

I smile as I recall a v similar one in Slovenia which I ended up at after being diverted by a cop (See RR)

Anyway, I hop on and have a chat with the ferry pilot.

He sounds like Steve McClaren, gives me a few tips on routing, asks if I want to watch him shagging his wife.

I use Google translate to say "Watching your hairy gonads is not on my travel itinerary today"

He bills me 1 .50 Euro and mutters something about typical repressed Bastaerd Inglese………..

Roll off, off to Overloon……...

On arrival at Overloon, I cant help myself, I have to buy something from the Jonny Napalm shop.

Honking Doss Bag with sleeves..... No

Manky old Desert boots.....No

Arnhem 75 tacky sticker......No

Gas Mask..... I consider getting this as a gift and backtracking to the ferry pilot...…….but no...……

I settle on a black cord bangle, you can unravel it and use it as an escape tool, tow rope, restraint device, whatever. Ideal for any GS Adventure...….

I decide to just wear it and look like a twat...…...

I lied.

Backtracking to the ferry with gas mask.

Actually I wish I’d bought 2 because his wife farted a lot and had clearly had a lot of eggs for lunch.

Still to be fair, whilst they were at it like belt fed Polaris missiles I did get my phone charged and steal a bread roll and my 1.50 Euro back.

Hop back on........ coffee in Overloon time.....

Coffee in the centre of Overloon, very nice indeed.

Moral dilemma arrives, lady gives me change from 50 after id given her 20.

Discover this as I wander off...…………….. what to do...…………

I return and put things right, my moral compass allows me to steal a glass from a miserable old German cow, but not rip off a nice Dutch waitress.

I think moral compass wise its about right eh ???????

Anyway look for digs in Arnhem, the plan being to crash out, have tomorrow doing Arnhem and then catch the 2030 ferry from Rotterdam.

Its bloody expensive but I have a brainwave.

I search on the IHG points app thing and presto a room right in the centre for 20000 points.

I stay at a lot of hotels for work so manage to get shit loads of points.

Happily book it.

It would be 110 Euros, about 4 times my normal cost...…. eekkkk

The Holiday Inn is smack in the middle of town.

As usual the good people of Arnhem love us brits.

The hotel lets me have a late check out and free underground parking for the bike.

Its a fab room, shower up and head out after a deluxe meal in my room...…..

Boppard Breakfast morphs into Arnhem Dinner...

Please note Black tow rope on wrist, may be handy for grappling the bike up the ramp tomorrow...…..
