Hi everybody,
I have a burning desire to see the Matterhorn this summer. Could anybody
tell me the best place to see this majestic mountain and recommend any places to stay nearby? Is Zermatt the place to go?
Thanks,
Richard

Zermatts a pig to get to - its traffic free - you have to get on a train to finish the journey leaving your bike in a park way down the mountain.:(

I'd go round the other side of the Matterhorn to Cervinia in Italy - a lot cheaper, nice bars & restaurants & you can take the bike:thumb2

Camp there this year with my Children fantastic place.

Zermatt is good, it's traffic free so you have to park and get the train or taxi up (it's easy though)

I camped the last place before the public road stops, it's better than the camp site in Zermatt.

We also spent a few days at interlarken - North face of the Eiger and all that.

This picture was taken in August when it snowed down to 1600M.

Great hiking routes and you don't need to use a car bike unless you want to - This map is Interlarken.

I took my old T150v Trident there:rob Camp at Tasch a few miles below Zermatt, get up really early and take the train to Zermatt and cable car to the top of the Kleine Matterhorn.
Then make your way to the Hornley Ridge on the Matterhorn proper, climb as high as you dare then walk back to Zermatt for a few beers before returning to Tasch.

It was one of the best days of my life:thumb

I,ve been there last May on the way to Monaco GP. This is the view from Cervina. Getting there is very easy and road is spectacular. I can send you some pictures taken from the saddle if you want.:thumb2

Trip to Matterhorn

Thanks for all the advice. Had heard that Zermatt is car free. How safe is it to leave the bike for the day. I like my on suit facilities so no camping, what are the hotels like and is it possible to park the bike at the hotel? I would consider Cervinia but are the views of the mountain as good? Thanks for the offer of more pictures Cyprys but how do we do that, IT is not my strong point!!!
Richard.

Been to Zermatt several times, you can park at Tacsh and train in to Zermatt 15 mins and very cheap, by far the best veiws of the mountain.Bike security not an issue. You could also stay in Tacsh for a few days we did,ask at tourist information sorted us out in a lovely log alpine bed and breakfast for peanuts called guesthouse friedheim, balcony veiw inc with parking for bike,no english was spoken but this was never a problem. From here you can explore the mountains more leisurely, much to much to take in on just a day visit. As others have said if you have time a trip to Interlarkan is also well worth it.A trip to the top of the jungfrau is expensive but so awe inspiring i do it every time i am there, well worth the money, you do need a clear day though.Hope this helps you out,you will love it.:beerjug:
