Triumph Tiger Sport 800

And now a Tiger Sport 800 Tour.
Competition for the CB1000GT. It’s a £1000 more but comes with top box as well .

I quite like that, just a shame it has a chain. I think Triumph are onto a potential winner there as most Jap sports tourers will only accommodate either panniers or a top box but not both (something to do with the strength of the rear subframe and/or the permitted total weight/payload?), which if you're touring 2 up could be the decider so SWMBO has enough room for her "stuff"

If it had shaft drive it would weigh 20kgs more and put out 15bhp less. Think chain is fine for most .

It might not work but try rolling the throttle forward past the stop, that’s how you cancel it gently on BMWs, maybe it will work the same on the Triumph

Enjoy the new bike, if I rode one up this would be on my list of candidates for sure 👍
I does work, thank you.

So, now to luggage.

I want to use my Reckless 80 kit on this bike nd specced it with the Triumph OE alloy rack. Unfortunately and unknwn to me at the time it comes with integrated pillion hand grips which make it too wide to comfortably accomodate the Mosko Moto kit. Does anybody know of an aftermarket rack that doesn't have pillion grips?

A one hour test ride on a base model was enough to convince me.

My Tiger Sport Tour arrives in about a month. My local dealer, Total Triumph in Taunton say that they won't be getting another in red until August. I didn't want it in blue. Getting the Tour model saved several hundred pounds over speccing up a base model, although that might be used up in part by swapping the heated grips for Oxfords, which I can get reasonably cheaply. I have bough an MRA Vario screen, which will be fitted instead of the factory one, as that was far too noisy, with either too much buffeting or too much wind blast. MRA Varios have worked for me on several different bikes and I'm hoping this one is as good.

I have part exchanged my 790 Duke. I'll be sad to see it go, because it was so good, but with the Triumph being more of an all rounder I won't ride the KTM enough to keep it. I just need to sell my 2005 Pan European now and will listen to reasonable offers as close to the asking price of £3k as possible.

I'm planning a non motorway ride to see my son in Norwich to run it in. That's about 550 miles door to door and if I visit my brother in Lowestoft on the way back (it's his turn to buy the curry) I'll have it run in in a weekend. I reckon the next 4 weeks will really go slowly.

I will be interested to hear how the MRA screen works for you, as I am contemplating ordering one (like you, mine was a big improvement on a previous bike). The standard screen is awful, and spoils the bike, mind you when I test rode a Tracer 7GT that screen was just as bad!

Delivery is due mid April. I'll let you know.

Thing about trumpets I don't like (having owned a few, including the Explorer 1200) is that for relatively big power they deliver big weight and feel top heavy. There's a lot more sense in the 800. Should have more than enough go and chain drive is no bad thing since it reduces weight significantly. I have been "re-calibrated" by my 950 Duke and wouldn't ever return to a big, overweight "sports tourer" now. What it lacks in outright power it makes up with superlative handling and relatively light weight. Triumph should do well with the new 800.

New bike day arrives on Saturday. 12 o’clock appointment for handover. Excited? Yeah, just a bit. My first Triumph. My first ride on a Triumph was the test ride and I was hooked. Put a deposit down there and then. Delivery has been brought forward. I drive back from a break in Cornwall tomorrow morning, then over to the showroom to drop some bits off for my px and collect some bits for the new bike. Then I’ll be good to go on Saturday.

275 miles now, with first service at 600 miles booked for 8th April. This bike has reawakened my love of motorcycling. It just feels right for me. Running in is a right pain though. 3,500 revs for the first 100 miles gave me 50mph in 6th. I can use 5,000 revs now, which is just over 70mph, but I'm forever changing gear on a gearbox that needs to loosen up a lot. Hopefully I get a few more revs soon.

Riding position is spot on for me. Upright, a la GS, but lighter, much smaller and narrower, with both feet flat at a standstill. Seat is ok. Arse ache sets in after about an hour but is no worse after 2 hours and is tolerable. A ride to Norfolk is on the cards so I'll see how it is after 5 hours.

Dashboard is basic and I haven't got it set how I'd like yet and the handbook (online) is confusing.

Luggage seems ok. Let's hope it is fully waterproof. It's a bit flimsy and wouldn't crash well, so I'll try not to.

Handling already feels superb and confidence inspiring. 17" wheels with Michelin Road 5s grip well. Brakes are plenty good enough with Triumph branded J Juans on the front and a Triumph branded Nissin, I believe, on the rear.

Standard screen has been replaced with an MRA Vario. No quieter, but far less buffeting. I'm 6' tall and have the screen on its highest position. Heated grips are adequate, but could be hotter. Heated gloves are on the way. Perfect now the weather is warming up :D

I can't get the Triumph app to pair with the bike yet, but I've only tried half a dozen times.

This bike excites me in a way that no bike has really done since my K1 GSXR1000. It makes me smile.

Another 300 miles to do over the next week, but that won't be a chore, then it's fun time. Happy days.

I've fitted the MRA Vario Touring screen and I'm a bit disappointed to be honest. Had one on a Tiger 900 and it was a huge improvement over the OE Screen, but this one is better, but not significantly so. I didnt get buffeting with the OE Screen but a huge amount of noise. Still no buffeting with the MRA but not a lot quieter (I have the screen in it's highest position wirth the blade also as high as possible and I think I will have to leave it there). I think it is a tad too narrow and a couple of inches extra on the width would have made a big difference.
It looks nice, but for ther cost of it, I am fairly unimpressed.

First service yesterday and the red line (that isn't red, it just flashes at me) is now at 7,000 revs. Less short shifting and more noticeable torque. When I first rode it after the service I wondered what they had done because it sounded brilliant. Then I realised I hadn't put my earplugs in. Fuckwit moment of the day. I don't know how many miles I have to do before I can use full power but the grin factor increases with every step up in useable revs.

On the ride home, the rear tyre warning appeared twice on the dash. The tyre seemed fine and the pressure remained correct for the 45 miles home. I'm waiting for Total Triumph to call me back to discuss this. Other than that the bike just keeps getting better as I am able to use more and more of the power. A ride to Norwich next weekend will test its distance comfort. It's a 600 mile weekend. Let's hope the weather remains good.

Your statement ‘the bike excites me’ is great.

Good that it’s given you fresh impetus on bikes.

Clearly chosen well 👍🏽

1500 miles now. Full power available from 1000miles. Did a 600 mile weekend to Norwich. Seat comfort very good and getting over 60 mpg. Not ridden it for a couple of weeks but looking forward to a ride to Nottingham later this month for the test match and to Leeds in August, again for the test match. I'm sure that when the weather is ok (it's lashing down and blowing a gale today) there will be lots of other shorter rides.

Can anyone recommend pannier and top box inners? The Triumph ones aren't shaped for the panniers, just roll top bags. Google has not been my friend yet.

I got my pannier inner bags for my Triumph from Great Bikers Gear. Click
I'm happy with them, they fit the panniers well and keep my gear tidy. I got them cheaper from the same company on the 'bay
