Hi folks. i recently got a loom for my zumo 550 from Nippy Normans that plugs into the socket at the headstock on my 04 1200GS. It worked fine for a while but now it switches on with the ignition but will turn off and on and off etc etc. Its definitely not the loom thats the problem.
I had the same trouble when i wired the zumo into the socket under the saddle.

Anyone come across this before??

Any chance it could be the little 'teeth' on the zumo cradle? They're notorious for going wrong.

Dont think so. I have it hard wired to the battery now and its fine. Doesnt switch on with the ignition though

Not according to the extremely unhelpful person from Garmin I spoke to last week.

Apparently, they had never had a problem with a bike cradle before, they've sold thousands and mine must be a "one-off" caused by corrosion.:(

Unit has also stopped charging from car cradle so pretty much useless now. Garmin just don't want to know at all as it is out of warranty and their only response is "tough luck, buy a new one". I've been a Garmin customer for nearing 15 years and they first time I contact them they could not have been more unhelpful.:(

Same happened to mine. Garmin changed it for a refurbished one for €110. I thought that was fair enough.

My problem is the power supply harness on the bike not the garmin end of it

I had the same problem as you on my 05 1200GS with a 400, which I never got to the bottom of. Can only suggest you go direct to the battery or as I did, off a Cetec fuse panel.
I theorised that it was a movement-related issue that the canbus saw ie over a bump and momentarily the unit became disconnected from the contacts, but not long enough for the Zumo to notice, producing a pulse that triggered the on/off response.

No way of checking this on the move of course, just an idea, but problem solved as above.

I have it direct to the battery again. Was nice to have it on a switched live though. Ah well.

Thanks for the replies

Garmin mount

I'm on my second in a few years. Had to buy a new one, as the inside of the original had corroded.

Has the Garmin power cable still have the supplied blade fuse and holder in the line? I had this disconnection problem with mine and found that the connection across the fuse was intermittent, so I removed the mini fuse holder and replaced it with a round fuse inline fuse holder. This seems to have a more positive (spring) connection to the fuse. Not had the problem since (3 years).

Ill check it out. I have it wired direct to the battery at the minute. Thanks for the advice :beerjug:
