Turkey

I'll be arriving in Istanbul about the second week of September. I intend to stay in the city for a couple of day. So if any one is still around it would be nice to meet up.

I'm then carring on across Turkey and even thinking of climbing Mount Arrat.

Let us know when you're here, for a beer or two.

Yes.

Oh, i see. It's approx 800-900km. Sounds like a lot, but it's now quite literally one long road between Igoumenitsa and Istanbul. The motorway in Greece (called the Egnatia Odos) is brand new, empty and a good road all the way....well, other than when you get to Thessaloniki when it becomes part of the city's ring road. It'll take you all the way to the Turkish border the other side of which is a 2 into 3 lane motorway the rest of the way. I did it in a day last year, with 2 hours worth of stops along the way.

It's worth noting that there was only one service station on the entire Greek section of the road (Igou-Turkey side), so you'll have to plan to leave the road if needing fuel. There are sign posts at each junction telling of how it is to the nearest petrol.

turkey

cheers expat, that makes life easier for us getting to istanbul.
weve got 13 days for the trip. now i know we can get to ancona in at the most two days, and i know i can get home in three days from ancona that leaves us an easy eight days to enjoy the ride down.
cheers, paul.

Bear in mind that when arriving in Ancona it takes quite a time to unload the ferry (assuming you are using Superfast). I've used it twice and it's taken at least another hour after docking before leaving the boat. It's a bit quicker in Igou.

yeah expat is right.ancona igoumenitsa ferries takes ages, expat? i want to try via slovenia croatia alabania greece this year on august...alone just my self..Do you think its a good idea..?just the coast line...

it will not take one hr to get off in september.. peak time for the ferry is end of august.. sept is not so busy

I've not done the slovenia / croatia / albania / greece route, but L has I believe, and he's said it's fine. I'd say doing it alone would be brilliant, you get to stop where you want and one thing's for sure, you'll meet loads of other bikers on the way so you'll never be alone in the evenings....unless you choose to. Camp though, there's nothing better.

Be warned, 'a beer or two' with Dave means drinking every establishment in the area dry and getting utterly hammered.:beerjug:

Don't miss it:thumb

Now now, I've become a father since you were here, and I have calmed down.

Ha ha ha ha! Even I believe that!

Ok boys, a beer it is. And another, and another, and another........

It's not the base mapping that I want to change, it's just that my Garmin map (CN Europe NT2010) doesn't have particularly detailed mapping of Eastern Turkey, I just wondered if anyone knew of a source.

It might be worth having a look at these and comparing them with CN 2010 - http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php

However, as I understood it from the thread to which I posted the first link, it's not just about changing the basemap. I believe that uploading any maps to the 2720 can be a complicated process.
