I spent a few days in Istanbul in the early 90's when flying back to UK from Libya. Landed for some unknown reason at the time sans luggage.

Still, ended up coming back to the UK with extra socks/undies and a bloody carpet. They caught me off guard, plied me with tea and sweet talk.
Hey, I still have it. double knotted and beautiful pattern.

Excellant city and I believe the next city of culture.

Byker, thank you...looks like I'll be in Istanbul around 12 June for a couple of days and then heading through Bursa probably 14 June. The trip is definitely now on. I leave the U.K. on 3-4 June (overnight ferry from Hull) but I haven't planned anything after that.

Expat, the offer of a beer or two is still on if you are around that weekend. Not sure whether you'll be following the World Cup but England happen to be playing USA on the evening of the 12 June so I may be on the lookout for somewhere with a screen. I wil be taking your advice and spending a bit of time in Western Turkey to see places like Assos before heading back. Can't wait, now!

Byker, the village itself hadn't changed much; it was wonderful to see it again. Bit of a surprise for the people there for me just to turn up. I had quite a lot of photographs (not all were on the blog) and (as I think I mentioned), many of the people in the photographs are either no longer with us or have moved away to work. For some of them, my pictures were the only photographic record. 33 years is a long time and the tree in the village centre isn't the only thing to have grown a little wider. I'm delighted I made it, though, and hope I'll be able to maintain some sort of contact....if only by following Bursaspor in the European Champions League! Again, sorry I didn't manage to contact you.
