I use a cable tie, someone I know put the pencil in at BDC turned the engine and 'snap' half a Derwent HB resting on top of the piston

I keep a special piece of alloy tent pole in my tool box just for this purpose

Did take the bung out nice when I fitted a new hall sensor though...
