Two nights in Scotland.

Two nights in Scotland: a group of us are going up weekend after next - riding up to Inverness on Saturday, round the NC500 on Sunday, back to Inverness then home on Monday - will be around 1500 miles round trip. Have done that round Scotland in half the time before but you don't get to see much that way

I've done the Applecross thing twice now and each time I thought, why bother ! IMO it's one of those roads that doesn't live up to it's reputation. If it's views and scenery you want there are much better available with nicer biking roads as well.

The road from the Corran ferry down to Strontian is fabulous by comparison and usually deserted. as an example.

I agree that the road from Corran ferry is a cracker. The Bealach over Applecross can be like the M6 in summer. However, IMO, the views are exceptional, especially in late and early winter.

if you plan on staying in Lochinver let me know, I've lots of friends there, and a few with B&B's, i would say 400 miles is easily possible, but on the Highland roads not enjoyable, there are so many amazing views you'll want to stop lots.., so i'd plan on doing less miles per day on the Highland roads and get the miles in beforehand to buy some time.

Applecross is a great destination, with cracking views - but the pass, other than being a steep road, is a bit crap.

Is everybody doing this trip? Me and a mate are doing hull to Inverness next week then splitting the nc500 over two days back to Inverness then home again. We have decided to do motorways there and back just to reduce the times, we may decide a different route back depending on how much we ache!

Just home from a 500+ mile dealer led trip to Loch Assynt. If you have only 2 days I'd skip Applecross and keep heading North.
I'd forgotten how fantastic the road is to Ullapool and beyond from Fort William via Beauly.
Back down clockwise through Inverness - Tomintoul - Braemar - Blairgowrie - Perth. So many great roads.

Indeed it is. But not this time - we took the A82 to Beauly and my reference was in particular to the A835 from Garve to Ullapool. Brill!

As another suggestion if you fancy heading on to Skye, run up the east coast and stay at the Sligachan Bunkhouse. Fab location, nice accommodation, and easy access to a great pub down the track.

There's going to be nine of us heading to the Hebrides and back starting tomorrow.

We will be on Skye on Wednesday PM/Thursday AM next week if anybody is around? Getting the Armadale ferry to Mallaig from Skye then a winding route down to Mull....

... and the A87 is one of my favourite roads ever

Was up in Mitchells getting an MOT on Tuesday, went for a bimble afterwards. Old Beauly road then found myself in Ullapool then came home A 835, 832, 890, 87, 82.
Forecast was right, got a tad damp in the afternoon but you can go all over Europe and not find roads like that.
