About to order new tyres for my 1150 Adventure. For the last fifteen years I've been using Metzler Tourance and never had an issue or a complaint. On a second Adventure I owned my tyre fitter suggested Road Pilot 4's. I fitted them and again didn't have any issues or problems. So I'm looking for opinions from other 1150 owners please. I never go off road at all and all my riding is suburban commuting. The tyre guy (a BMW mechanic ) made the comment that tyre technology had moved on a lot in the last 15 years and said the Tourance were good but very much old tech.

Look at sport touring tyres. This is what I switched to on my 1150 and Super Ten. PR4, Roadsmart 2, Avon Storm 2 or Conti Road Attack 2.

If you never go off road then I can recommend Conti Road Attack 2's...did approx 6000 miles on my 1150 this summer - just changed to TKC70's.

Iv just fitted Tourances to mine, it had RP4s which as you said are fantastic BUT to me they just looked wrong on the bike i to do no offroad just the odd gravel drive, nearly went with TKC80s but bottled it and went with the Metz...

I've had no problems with Tourances for the last 100k miles, seem to work really well - but have just put a set of TKC80s on because they were going spare from another bike build. Since then bike has refused to start....must be sulking

Pirelli changed something with the Tourances in 2014. I was used to getting 15K miles from the rear and 25k from the front. The bike was second hand and came with Tourances which I liked so I stuck with them. Then the manufacturing moved to China and I had no end of problems. Split rubber down to the cords, no grip even on good warm roads and one front tyre was bald after 2k. My commute and riding never changed. Three sets were duly sent back to Pirelli and I was given a full refund. Since then I've been running Anakee 3's. Not as good as the old (German) Tourances but good enough especially as my annual mileage has dropped way down to about 8k.

The moral of the story is to try and source Tourances made in Germany if there are any left to be had.

Anakee 2's

Hi Luke
I can't fault Michelin Anakee 2's - probably used them for the last 150K. Great in wet and dry and great mileage.
I did try Anakee 3's once - but didn't think they suited the 1150GS nearly as well as the Anakee 2.

I think the problem with tyre questions is that most of us stick to what we've had on and liked - so have not tried all the competition.

I ran a set of the original Roadsmarts on my 1150 and whilst they gripped very well they didn't wear as well as the Tourances (German made) and changed the way the bike felt turning into low speed bends. The late style dual compound Tourance Next that I have on my Super Tenere have been excellent tyres, amazingly good life on the rear, in fact the front wears first. In terms of weight and power with the Yamaha low gear restrictions the 1150 and Super Ten are very close.

Aye, but what if the next (different) tyre he tried surprised him as being even better?

Don't Metzeler make Tourances, not Pirelli? 15k/25k has to be a record. Are you riding on carpet all the time?

Gay tire on a rufty, tufty 1150

:D

My 1150 came with nice Tourances. Never rode any GS before I got mine. Within a couple of hundred miles, I was flinging my GS through bends and roundabouts like I'd had the bike years. I have my chicken strips down to 1cm now. I'm sure other lads will get more out of them, but I'm at my limit reaching that, even if the bike/tyres could perform "better".

I love the look of the more off-road looking tyres, and my immature side really wants to fit some, but with Tourances being so good, I'd hate to ruin the handling just to look good. Perhaps on my France/Spain/Portugal trip in 2018 I'll fit Heidenau K60s, Anakee IIIs, or TKC80s. Just for the 20% of off-road riding we'll be doing. And for the photos... :thumb

I run TKC 80s on my 1150GSA all the year round and have done for the past 40k miles.
I was initially surprised by just how good they handle especially on dry Tarmac, once you get used to the feel of them, I doubt I would ride a lot quicker on Tourances :augie:

Pirelli own Metzeler and I was commuting 1,000 miles/week into Central London. Mostly cruising on the motorway which was good for the tyre life.

I have noticed that front tyres, including the ones I had on my RT's and ZZR1400, in recent years seem to be much softer than they used to be. I'm currently doing 1.5 front tyres to one rear. Used to be t'other way round.

Karoo Three, much better than the TKC 80 on tarmac just as good off.

Michelin

Like others, I had Tourances on my 1150 for 15 years without problems.
Due to bad reports of the Chinese versions I changed to Michelin Pilot Road &Trail 18 months ago. The bike now feels very much smoother, even on the mainly very poor roads in the south east, it's like a different bike. I haven't quite got my elbow down yet but wet leaves may help soon!!
Sadly, for various reasons, I have only done about 3000 miles on them so can't comment on the expected life as yet. None off road.

Regards to all

Graham
