The TPM's on my 08 GSA are playing up. The front one has now stopped altogether and the rear is going intermittent. I have just changed the tyres myself but I kept well clear of the monitors and both were working for 80 odd miles after refitting so I don't think I damaged them in the process. Since these are transmitters, there must be a receiver unit - does anyone know where this is? If it's in the instrument console I'm wondering if the 2 x HID's I have also just fitted under the beak may be interferring with the signal. Any ideas anyone (other than dump them!)?
 
You bike must be under warranty so share the problem with your dealer - that's what they're for.
 
tyre pressure monitors are a silly invention for options hungry people who like their "toys" fully loaded. On top of this they are universally (on the Porsche blobs they reckon due to centrifugal forces) totally unreliable. I can understand the idea on safety grounds esp when we are talking abt 300kg worth of bike, but its not worth it. Once a week, one should check pressures. When you get to know the machine and your tyres (I know my front loses 1 psi per month, my rear nothing in over 1 year), you adjust accordigly. In the unfortunate & unforseen situation of sudden deflation or blow up, you don't need a frigging monitor to tell you as at best you ll only just manage not to drop it.

Beemerman, have you unplugged the HIDs to see if the TPMs start to work? I know they can effect the instruments on the 1150 if too close.

What about the batteries in the TPM, assuming they have batteries, perhaps need replacing, or are they non-replaceable, sealed in?
 
yep - sry not meant to be of use whatsoever, just to take up space, time and vent off (annoying everyone else) as my car's TPMs have seized 3 months after I bought it! lol

"optons hungry people" refers to me partly...
 
Spoke to one of the chaps in Brizzal and he reckons the TPM 'chats' to the alarm unit, well, thats on my 650 at least :nenau
 
Having disconnected the battery, instrument cluster and both HID's I took the bike out for a run but still no pressures from the front monitor. No problem - it's not a big deal and when I hit the next service interval I will get the dealer to take a look. Back home, connect it all up again and decide to go out for a run. After about 30 miles or so the warning triangle pops up and displays the TPM, both of which are now zero. I know it's not a flat as I'm still going in a straight line so continue until I can stop safely. Switch off ignition, wait 5 seconds, engine start and ride off again. Rear TPM now reading OK so I guess it's a glitch.

Further into my ride I reach a stretch I know and take the bike up to "really officer?" speeds and since the computer is still set to TPM I notice the front is now reading a pressure. Slowing back down again to enter a town the reading goes off again (but no warning triangle) and stays this way until the next time I can repeat. Same happens - I get a reading then slowing down get nothing. By the time I get home the reading is staying on until I park the bike and the front goes blank but the rear maintains a reading.

So I guess the gyroscopic switch thats supposed to turn it on is gradually unsticking itself and it needed a high speed initially to free it? I'm just wondering if some lube got near the sensor when I put the tyre on and now it's freeing up a bit. At least I know I didn't damage the sensor with the tyre replacement process.

If it comes back 100% I will post up for the few that will be interested.

Yes, for the same damned fools who want electronic ignition, ABS, electric starters, pneumatic tyres, screens, automatic ignition advance, shaft drives, vulcanised rubber and monoshock suspension.

All silly unnecessary toys that get in the way of real men's bikes built like they used to be.

I assume that you work down a coal mine, fight bare-knuckled, and holiday in Scarbrough, so as to avoid all other sorts of unnecessary frippery?

Thats exactly that it is Beemerman. Look it in the 911UK.com blog too... plenty of TPM non op messages there.. In the Audi blogs too...

The company that makes them (there is 1 manufacturer globally I believe who patented the technology) clearly got their story wrong... Don't know what it is, but clearly centrifugal forces, the temp differential between cold tyre pressure (and resulting humidity inside the tyre) to its fully running internal air temp of 80C+ (even after a steady 70mph for 20min on the motorway) clearly affects thoe bloody TPMs. Just to say here that air temp on the interior of the tyre and the tyre temp surface have nothing to do with each other. One is the actual air mass inertia moving the air mass from rest (the point of contact on the road) to the top point of the wheel when that same wheel particle 180degrees later is travelling forward at twice the speed of motion (so in 70mph travel that would be 0-140mph-0 in every revolution of the whhel.) The other is friction induced by the tyre on the road surface (and what mst people think is the sole creator of heat)...

Bottom line: TPM's are not developed enough, they NEVER work so far, and are pretty much useless anyway....

And Northern boy, no I am not avoidng unnecessary frippery.. Starters, screens, pneumatic tyres and suspension advances since 1920 make sense. TPMs are silly. Too toyish... and useless, and will-be-obsolete-in-2-years thing..

Much like Sat nav choices of the late 90's... Saw one on a 10yo M5 BMW of a friend.... Lovely car in great condition, shame about the gadgets that look like an Amstrad 6128 looked then...

I assume that you actually meant to say that you don't find them useful, but I'm not sure why you did not say that. You are presumably not foolish enough to think that you can speak for all other owners, are you?..

As to your friend's old M5, what point are you trying to make? I have a new RS4, and the pressure sensors in that gave me warning of a slow puncture long before I could feel it at the wheel. Trying to make a claim about modern technology from a car with out of date kit is just silly.

I have a 3 series M sport, the tyre warning light came on last week, car was driving fine as its on run flats but the light came on. They are found on ALL new 3 series cars now.

Found a screw in the tyre when fitting a new one, seemed to work for me.

Its a low cost device, Ford are fitting them now as well, other car and bike manufacturers will quickly follow. They'll become very common very soon.

Quite right, from what I remember when I ordered my new Audi a few weeks ago the tyre pressure monitors are a £75 option, at that price you'd be silly not to fit a device that could warn you of gradual pressure release due to a slow puncture.

Mine work fine. They are temperature-compensated to 20deg C (or didn't you RTFM?) and are far from useless. Still, everyone's entitled to an opinion....
 
perhaps I am overreacting a little to make a point... Indeed, useless is a big word.. They are not useless, thay just aren't useful enough (IMHO) as one 'd need very little extra effort once a month to check tyres...

On top of that I maintain the application of the technology is not proven enough yet as there are numerous accounts for faults in cars as well as BM bikes... Yes, I am sure that soon everyone would put them on as standard equipment and also that very shortly thwese early systems will be refined and be mande totally reliable, much like any other vehicle technology from ABS to fuel injection systems did in the past...

The M5 point Northern boy was just to portray the fact that (as a customer) getting in too early in new technological gadgets is not always very beneficial. Things such as early & unrerliable Sat navs of 1998...

I also think that the concept of "not buying a very early model/version of anything" would be my motto.... I would always wait 3-5 years before buying something so it can be proven....

Quite. I am really much more comfortable, in what is such a high performance machine, to get warning as early as possible.

I'm up in the high Alps at the moment, and am out daily pushing the bike hard in variable conditions. I've been going from 32 degrees in the valleys to 10 in the high tunnels, switching between fully loaded with a full tank, to just me, with the tank on vapours. The surface has varied between gravel, snow, tarmac and mud, and I doubt that there is any rider on the planet who could ride through all this and yet still claim that they always noticed a puncture in plenty of time to safely stop.

Frequently, hings have changed enough that I've thought that there might bea problem, either that I've overheated the tyres, or that I've lost pressure. Being able to flip through to the pressures as I go has been fantastic. I think that about twenty times in the 2,000 miles I've done this week it has been useful to me.

I'll admit that if I were using the bike to go to Asda for toilet paper and cigarettes that it would not be something that I'd find as much use for, but then again, life is really too short to buy a bike like this and then not decamp to the mountains sometimes...

Which is a fair point, but this is old and tested technology now.

Anyway, the morning alpine rain seems to have lifted, the roads are drying, so I'm off across Mont Blanc to Courmayeur, Albertville, Chambery, Annecy and then back to Chamonix for a well deserved boozing session, so wish me luck with the snow.

In reality, I must admit that I an actuary in Wolverhampton, called Kevin. I'd love a bike, but they seem a bit scary, so I crib information from the web, ad can pretend on here to be a real biker.

I'm also saving up to move house first, as living with my mother is a bit awkward for a 45 year old, but needs must...

Sorry, but they are overkill, especially if like me you use puncture sealant. I'd rather not be parked in the Pyrenees with no mobile phone signal and a puncture than know my front tyre has lost 2lb in the last month.
Strictly for lazy barstewards and posers.
