Tyre Pressure Monitors

Sorry, but they are overkill, especially if like me you use puncture sealant. I'd rather not be parked in the Pyrenees with no mobile phone signal and a puncture than know my front tyre has lost 2lb in the last month.
Strictly for lazy barstewards and posers.

That is a very silly post, you know?

Why do you assume that I'd be stranded if I got a puncture? Have you not heard of puncture repair kits for tubeless tyres?

You are, I am afraid, entering into the logical fallacy of the false dichotomy. YOu are also indulging in wishful thinking if you believe that your sealant guarantees that you will not get stranded. In fact, I used it on my last GS, but a nail through the tyre showed how troublesome that particular solution is. At least the stream of gunk showed me whee the hole was, though.

But then of course you may get a slightly faster puncture as you pick up a nail or other sharp object on that long strait, even with tyre sealant. It may not be a rapid deflation but fast enough that whilst on the strait you don't notice it but as you hit that next bend enough pressure is lost to cause loss of control. I think I'd prefer to have the warning pop up on the dash to tell me something was up prior to the bend than find out about it as I scrape along the road.

Granted, it may not be a scenario that occurs everyday, but I do know of it being the cause of an incident and this is just one of many scenarios where an early warning may be helpful. So, for an extra that is relatively inexpensive I think it is worthwhile having.

I don't use puncture sealant now, but I have in the past and it has, IMHO, saved me. On one occasion I hit some metal in the road that put a deep gash in the tyre, it didn't stop the tyre going down but it did help reduce the rate it went down sufficiently to get me round the double bend I was about to negotiate. It has also sealed one of my tyres with a simple nail puncture. Having said that, I have on two occasions seen it fail to seal simple, small diameter, nail type holes. Puncture sealant is pretty good stuff but it is not by any means a cure-all ;)

Oh, sorry Mister-bloody-perfect. You seem to be missing the point altogether here. Nothing can guarantee anything in life, but I'd like to be informed of impending disaster if possible. How can ultraseal do that at 1.2 leptons on a motorway?

Strictly for lazy barstewards and posers.

Not quite sure which category I fit into here.

BTW - if we're name-calling, puncture sealant is for stupid gits.

I don't remember posting any asumptions about you sweetie?? ... and yes I have heard of puncture repair kits for tubeless tyres.
I've also in my youth heard of and used tyre levers and patches for tubes.

You are, I am afraid, entering into the logical fallacy of the false dichotomy.

Sorry, silly and badly educated ... translation please someone?

As I said before ... for lazy barstewards and posers .... along with ESA etc. etc.

No name calling!!! Just a generalization.

Perfection I'm not. But I do have an opinion which I stand by.

I'm not missing any point.

My choice is puncture sealant yours is dodgy unproven technology.

I know my sealant is in the tyre and with luck should help me in the event of a possible puncture ....

...... do you know if your monitors are even working correctly? :augie

Well generally, I object to being called a lazy barsteward or a poser. So take yer generalizations somewhere else.

Unproven? They've been around on cars for years! Do you wander about with your eyes shut?

I know my sealant is in the tyre and with luck should help me in the event of a possible puncture ....
With luck, may help you. Didn't help a mate with a No.8 x 25mm screw in the middle of Wales. Just caused the tyre man to have a fit when he saw the mess he had clean up before fitting a new tyre.

...... do you know if your monitors are even working correctly? :augie
Well, actually - yes. They agree with my trusty Draper pressure gauge every week. Funny that!

Please people

stop the bickering - life's too short. I put the post up in the first place simply because I like to know how things work on my bike since I place my life in its hands each time I get on it. I have done well without TPM's for 30 years and hope to do well with them for the next 30. May be being a little assumptive with that but the points the same. Its not life or death but in a short time of using them I have found the monitors useful. More so than the ASC which I don't even know how to turn on or off.

They will get changed under warranty if they have failed but I just want to know how they work cos I'm an anorak about things working if they are fitted. I'm probably anally retentive as well and my spelling/grammar is not so good but I don't really care. If I can work out whats going on with them, maybe how not to break them during a tyre change then someone else may benefit with that knowledge. And that at the end of the day is the process by which new technology gets incorporated into everyday life that then gets taken for granted.

Yes, you did. Repeating it makes you look like more of a dick than you did the first time. Well done mate.

And no, I am not going to educate you in logical fallacies. Suffice it to say that a sound argument is constructed from valid premises, and logical deductions. Your logic sucked. I assume that you know how to use Google, so look it up.

And before you throw a hissy fit at the bad man poking fun at your idiocy, I suggest that you sit down and realise that implying that I am lazy or a poser was a ******'s argument.

Now run along, and do stop trolling. It is very infantile.

Calm down sweetie. :comfort
Just because I don't understand the big words you use is no excuse for calling me Dick. Or infantile. Neither of which is my name.
I've never had a hissy fit that I know of. See, more things I don't understand.

If I run along does that stop me strolling?
I haven't been infantile for the last 60 years. Thank you for that.
I'm sitting down and I still think it's for lazy barstewards and posers :ronno

You are doing it now, actually. You are trolling, dropping insults and names into a thread to get a reaction. If you are genuinely sixty plus, you should be ashamed.

Yes I am 60+ and clever enough to have kept you nibbling at the bait for a couple of days sonny. :JB

Not that bright are we. :augie

Bored with you now, it was too easy. :comfort

PS: Ever thought about subscribing to the site - its worth every penny with some of the knobs who get on here.

The exchange above is shameful!

I fully agree.

And, Red1, trying to imply you are clever by supposedly winding other members up by hijacking a thread that started with a genuine technical question just demonstrates how childish you are

My apologies Phil, but this is only a minor confrontation :hide

If you read my OP #20 you'll see I gave my opinion with a last comment that I thought may be taken humourously. As no-one else objected I can assume no-one else was offended.

Not to offend you Phil, but I'm 60+ only in years not in attitude. If you think a little p*ss take is "shameful" stay well away from the SS!

I don't know what "SS" is so am unable to stay away from it.

Again, this forum is not for psstaking. A little psstaking can be funny, I am guilty of that myself, but you take it too far - beyond a joke, it becomes unhelpful, negative and unfunny.

but that's only my opinion.

Phil

Life's too short Phil, especially at our ages, chill out and enjoy.
There's better things to do in life than winge about a dodgy thread.

Which is a fair point, but this is old and tested technology now.

Anyway, the morning alpine rain seems to have lifted, the roads are drying, so I'm off across Mont Blanc to Courmayeur, Albertville, Chambery, Annecy and then back to Chamonix for a well deserved boozing session, so wish me luck with the snow.

very jealous actually, TPM or not.... lol

Will be going in a month... have to wait a bit for better weather and less varied conditions as my GS doesn't have TPMs! :blast

oh... and btw I 'm sorry to have started this TPM argument that took giagantically silly dimensions in the previous 2 pages....

Everyone's right to buy and choose what they want... I still think the technology surrounding TPM is too young and unproven though lol! When they become reliable and free, then every manufacturer will feature them (like ABS and soon Satnav) and then inadvertedly I will get them too...

Still jealous of Alpine touring NorthernBoy!

No more

I have written two replies and deleted them both before sending - I don't have the energy anymore. Thank you for the posters that replied positively and made useful suggestions. If anyone is interested for future reference or you come across this thread in a search and have the same issues, maybe with a bike out of warranty, please feel free to pm me and I can let you know how far I have got with this. Can't promise anything but I know how I will be modifying my tyre changing methods in the future.
