Tyre pressure sensors.

Has anyone had any problems with these. They came fitted on my 2010 1200GS and they are becoming annoying.

I checked my tyre pressures in the garage cold with an accurate guage. Go out for a ride midway through warning light comes up indicating fault with rear tyre.

A few more miles down the road it goes off. If you turn the engine off for a spell that will also cancel the light. Then after a while same happens again.

Now i am aware pressures can change when the tyre gets warm but surley that should not throw on a warning light.

Any thoughts ???
 
...They're also made of cheese, be really gentle with them when you stick air lines / foot pumps on or you'll snap them....
 
Mine did that one day. I stopped, and found that I was not getting a pressure reading at all on either tyre. So I rode home and found that one started to register, but the back one didn't. I was lucky it was still in warranty. The system was checked at the dealers, (still in warranty) found that my main battery had to be replaced, and the rear tyre pressure sensor, as the battery for that had gone. The removal of the wheel, plus tyre to remove and replace sensor would have cost. I find sometimes that the rear has to warm up before I get a reading now. I am tempting the gods but my 08 bike with 21k miles on it seems ok, for now.
 
Mine do the same i.e. work when they feel like it. More problems with the back than the front but both take a holiday sometimes, usually after about 30 miles. I'll get them changed under warranty at the next service. Frankly I don't really see the point of them. Doesn't take long to check the tyre pressures and it's a good discipline. 09 1200gs

I thought the same for a while. I had both replaced under warranty and they have been fine for the last two years. I have however, had two rear punctures which were alerted to me by the sensors even though I couldn't feel anything untoward. They were both slow punctures and I was able to fix them at my leisure rather than find out 100 miles further down the road. So, I think they are useless for a sudden blowout but excellent of warning you that there's a slow puncture which can only get worse.

Had a rear tyre puncture last weekend on aun unclassified road. The yellow triangle came together with the tyre pressure symbol, followed in a couple of seconds by a flashing red triangle, then the display switched to the tyre pressure display showing me the rear pressure dropping quickly - think digital speedo under braking. 50m up the road there was a spot to pull into - tps now showing 26psi -and parked up, helmet off, loud hiss from tyre, absolutely flat in a couple of minutes. Not quite a blowout, but still quick.

Modern transport stopped by the stone age - a 7mm wide piece of flint with razor like edges. :blast

Do not even attempt to use air line at garage etc, it will just snap the valve stem in two. Get yourself a 90 degree adaptor for £6 and save a lot of hassle. Should come in the tool kit but that would be easy and expensive for BMW!!:thumb2
 
Same happened to me on my 2010 Adventure. Popped to the garage to top the tank up, just about to drive into the forecourt and the red warning triangle started flashing and showed the front tyre down to 1.5 bar. I parked the bike and checked the front tyre and it was fine, fuelled up and off we went with no problems. Very strange.
 
Had 'em on my K1300 s, were faultless. Still checked the pressures manually tho, and often found that they were not terribly accurate.

Having said that don't have 'em now on the GSA. Do I miss 'em? Nope not a bit. Would I spec them again on a new bike? Nope.

I can see that was useful. Maybe they do have a point.
 
I had the same problem puncture the other day, the sensor told me great got home in time, massive nail .......

Removed the nail and put a plug in it :cool: 10 mins later all done repaired :beerjug:

However the sensor did not alter and record the inflation so it still shows 1.2 psi..... the next day I ridden it to work with red triangle flashing (very annoying when you have no fault) stopped at the garage to check the pressure sure enough still 26 psi... So I took the valve out with the engine running and watched the sensor drop to 0. I re-inflated the tyre } the sensor did not record the exact pressure so still have a red triangle......:mad:

Anyone got any advice that I can try before heading down the BMW garage for them to reset it with machine??? :nenau
 
Finally had my rear one replaced under warranty and now all works well. Interesting that once the rear one goes MIA the front doesn't work reliably either. Takes fancy testing to see which one duff.
 
The sensor in the wheel has its own battery. When the battery runs out you need to fit a new sensor. The sensor then has to be programmed in to the bike to work.
 
Cheers, my bike is only 15 month old ....... Perhaps new battery, im going to play with it today and see if i can get it to register more psi battery is still working at the moment:rolleyes::confused:
