It's that time again when I need to re-shoe my GS.

I've been running Tourances for the last while, and to be honest they are good all rounders but for the winter I don't find them as grippy as I would like.

Anyway I'm looking for opinions and experiences on the best road tyres for the GS on the basis of handling, grip and et weather performance.

Not interested in how many miles I'll get out of them as I don't do a whole load and no pushed about off-roading as I'll probably not get it further off tarmac than the front lawn.

Cheers.

Tyres

I'm running Battlewings but looking at conti's next shoe change. One of those subjects that get plenty of coverage here.:handbag

tyres

Just returned from a trip to Poland, left home with a new Conti Road attack on the back 3700 miles later totally squared off , fitting 021 rear and 020 front heard there good .

I agree with Steve, I got a pair of conti road attacks for £150 but they have squared off very quickly.
I had street pilots on before, they were much better at keeping profile.

I had bridgestone 020's on my Bandit 12 and and they were very good. I may give the 021/020 combo a go next time.

Anyone got a reasonable idea of how much a Dunlop trailmax rear tyre should be to be supplied and fitted? If they have a good name for a supplier around the Swindon area, all the better!

Just search 'tyres' in the 1200 section and you will find enough contradictory advice to totally confuse you. The subject has been covered weekly for the 3 years I have been visiting.

Why cant we have a 'sticky' thread for tyre advice?

Not a bad idea..................would a 'sticky poll' work :nenau

We could list all the common tyres and get peeps to vote for their favs together with comments as to why they've chosen them, this bit's important as one persons grippy tyre is another persons poor mileage tyre..........

Or is it all bollox anyway :nenau

Try ProTyre at Westbury.

I consistantly use the Glos branch as they match or even beat internet prices on loose wheel basis.

Don't know how you managed that - on my third set of Road Attacks on my HP2, getting around 5000 miles to a rear and only marginally squared off. Were your miles mostly motorway?

big thumbs up for avon storm st / azarro combination, now on my second rear.....except for wear versus the tourances, i found them better in every way, turn in/ grip / feel on the edge & i'd say a better improvement in handling than the full ohlins suspension i'd put on...i think they're cheaper than the others listed here too...

one mans' meat....

oh yes about 3000 from the 1st rear, & my bike gets leathered ALL the time :augie

conti road attacks

I have just put on road attacks, fitted on a pouring wet day, rode home with them and very impressed. Straight from the off had good grip, seem to warm up okay, ride lot smoother than tourances.
Mileage is proportionate to type of tyre work, if you sit at 90 mph for an hour then your tyre will be warmer than a present moto gp tyre thus wearing the hell out of it, you cannot have a sticky tyre and expect high motorway miles from it, it will square off, doesnt seem like rocket science to me......
So i would put on what you like the look off, price too, and give it plenty, most tyres are better than the rider nowadays.
If you read the bike mag tyre test last month then the pure off road knobblies were down by under two seconds a lap compared to the quickest, mmmmnn, wonder who sponsored that test?
So, dont belive everything on here, or in a mag!
Happy tyre hunting....:type

I use Dunlop D607 Trailmaxes, and I pretty much like it.

Makes sense to me. BTW, congrats on reaching 5K posts. How many of them were related to tyres?

Avons are Top

Tried quite a few tyres in the last 40K but the Avon St Storm rear and Azaro front were the best by a long way.
Good in the wet, mileage reasonable at 5500K on the rear but they just feel right as well. Even squared no handling issues ( unlike the Pilot Road 2's).
Have read good things about the Conti's but not enough to convince me to change.
The Avon's are a good price too - Biker's World :)

Yes Mav a lot of the miles were motoways but I still feel I should have got better mileage than I did, shame really because they are bloody good tyres. Just ordered new Bridgestones 021 & 020.See how I get on with those.

Done 56,000 miles now and I have tried most of them...keep going back to Tourances (not EXP's !(crap)).

500 mile a week all weather commute and have never let go yet in all sorts of conditions and anyone who knows me knows I ring the bikes neck most of the time!

Can't beat them for all round to be honest. Others better in some areas but these just to it all for me.:thumb
