Tyre wear question

My rear tyre on my '13 GS is a Tourance Next. The wear bars are about 2mm below the surface of the tyre in the centre.
I have an 800 mile round trip to Cornwall in a few weeks, do you think they'll be ok for that?

No idea how quick the last few mil will wear!
Do you guys run the tyres down until the wear bar is flush with the rest of the tyre?

Just change them, why take the risk - lets say tyre life is 7000 miles so (800/7000) * 100 = 11.43% of the total. What cost a new rear tyre £120? So we are talking about £13.70p - is that worth the risk?

How many miles has it taken to wear the tyre that far and how many mm of tread on the tyre to start with?

You will be fine, just ride the twisty roads where possible. remember you only need 1mm of tread to be legal.

If you are worried, check at the halfway point at 400miles in Cornwall. I am sure someone will be able to replace the tyre if needed.

I am with Engineer, why chance it.
It's nothing in the grand scheme of things changing a tyre with maybe 800 miles to go, especially with the amount of rain we are currently getting.

Just because the tread wears a bit it doesn't mean that you will instantly fall off. Only problem would be if it was pissing down and you were riding through puddles at speed when you could aquaplane. Match your speed to the conditions. After all they go round the island seriously quickly with no tread whatsoever.

Finish them off with your trip to Cornwall, saves squaring off your new ones, I'm doing the same at the moment running around Corsica on worn out Anakees, they still ride perfectly

The centre of the tyre when close can wear very quickly to the cord with in a few 100 miles sometimes, I must agree with some others just go change them, apart from the satisfaction of less likely getting a puncture and having to replace while away new tyres just ride much better when new, once scrubbed of course.

This thread brought something to mind, a friend of mine got fined in germany for a tyre that was below the legal limit (3mm) this is more than the wear markers on most tyres.
If you doing a Euro trip don't come back through Germany.

as someone said above. You will likely get a puncture or caught in in heavy rain with minimum grip.

Personally, I'd change the tyre for a new one.

Then keep the old tyre with some tread left and sell it on eBay for collection only.

I've sold partly worn tyres easily enough as someone will either want it to put on a bike they are Part Exchanging to keep their new tyres. Or a commuter will appreciate the low cost solution to keep him going on a budget.

Either way, do you really want the worry on your holiday?
