Hi chaps.

I've not replaced bike tyres all that often so after some advice from your knowledgable chaps please...

My Conti TA2's on my 1190 are down to 4.5mm on the back and about 3.5mm on the front.

I'm off to the Outer Hebrides and back from Sussex at the end of May which is going to be around the 2300 mile mark.

Do you think it would be best to replace them before the trip or do you think they'll last? They've done 4700 miles so far...

Hope it's not a stoopid question....

You can always get them changed while you're on your trip?

Or order some in at a Scottish tyre fitters and ride the old ones up and new ones down?

I'll be off now as I shouldn't really be in here as I don't own anything that's Orange

Do you do your own tyers? If so put new ones on and keep the old ones to use again. It would be nice to have new ones for the trip. At 7000 the tyers will be very shagged especially if you indulge in any sprited riding. JJH

Should be fine as long as you don't rag it everywhere, they are legal as long as they have visible tread :)

Fit new ones. Would be a shame to bugger up your holiday because of worn out rubber.

That. You can always sling the old ones back on once you are home and the new ones are dead.
Scottish roads are VERY abrasive for the most part.

FWIW every tyre I had fitted to my GS was shagged (but still legal) by 4-5000 miles. I'm defo NOT into getting the best price/mileage out of tyres. Handling and grip has always come first.

The TA 2's on my 1190R are still going strong at around 9,000 miles. I'm amazed as this has included lots of two up + luggage M Way blasts at high temps as well as just about every other road / temp you can think of. The only thing they've not done is a track day. The handling seems to have remained pretty constant throughout.

I'm off on a trip in a couple of weeks and will add about another 1000 miles to them then. I'll be changing them when I get back but I don't expect them to be near the legal limit, even then.

Based on that Jumpjim I'd not be bothering to change them before the trip.

If it were me, I wouldn't change them before you go. You'll be supprised at how much life they have left when you get back. I must admit to setting off to Spain, 1,200 miles recently with not much left on my rear tyre. Didn't ride on motorways in France and there was still tread remaining when I got home. Is it me or do tyres wear out less per mile the less tread that remains?

NO!! They're legal if they have 1mm, unlike cars which need 1.6mm

The "visible thread" limit is -I believe- for mopeds.

Fecking weird that though, under 4,000miles v 9,000miles
TBF the first 1500 miles after running the bike in were mostly on the TT course at way over ban speeds on the big island. Another 1000 were riding like I stole it round the Scottish Borders. I won't be expecting much more than 5K tho. Never got much more than that on a 1200 GSA.

Still seams weird getting twice the mileage. I'm no speed merchant but they've been well used and like I said, quite a few miles in high temps on M ways two up and loaded - like you, never more than 4-5000 on my old GS. Ah well, one of those things I guess?
