Just thinking aloud really.

Given the variety of issues some small number of owners have had with their bikes, has anyone ever been given a replacement new bike by BMW?

I know 2 people, swapped without a fuss - TwinCams:augie

Just about

I think with all the warranty work I have now had to my 04 machine (soon to return after a nightmare 8 week repair job) I actually have very few components from the original. The only bits I can think are still as original are the fuel tank, rear shock, wheels and central engine block. Pretty much everything else is replaced. Gotta love a warranty.

Hi Zoltan

I would very much like to discuss this with you. I will of course fully respect anything you want to tell me in confidence. I am having issues with another model from BMW.

Please email me direct

Also if anyone else can give guidance on a strategy to take on the BMW empire in order to get a troublesome bike changed for a new one I would like to hear from them.

Thanks all.

Whilst i've not received an FOC 'new for old' deal, I have twice managed to get a very good deal on a replacement new 12GS/A (less than a grand to change the first one for a new GS even though the first one was bought as an ex demo 04 and had just short of 20k on it after the first year) then when that one started buggering me about (long story), BMW offered me a replacement GS but i'd had enough of those and the new GSA was being launched so I paid the extra cost between the budget GS and the GSA and I had the replacement bike delivered to me within three days.

I did have a torrid time with the first bike (over 18 warrantee claims in the first year) and the swap was agreed after suffering a brake failure, when the second bike suffered exactly the same brake failure, i reminded the dealer the history of the old bike, the dealer had a chat with BMW and they offered to replace the bike without me even asking:thumb2

Good luck, be persistant, but keep it all friendly if at all possible, letters and emails are much better than WOM, keep the dealer sweet at all times as he will be the major communication link betwen the BMW warrantee department, upset him and it will be a long hard slog for any results.

Do you happen to know if the dealer looses money by having to take a bike back in exchange for a new one, or are all costs passed back to BMW?

It would be useful to know this as it could affect the dealers desire to help in getting a replacement.

It would be hard for the dealer not to loose something even if it's just a few hours PDI'ing and swapping kit from one bike to the other, in the end he needs a happy customer, he's not going to stop selling BMW's so he needs to be a bit diplomatic with the BMW warrantee decision maker to get the best from this deal and any future business.

In the time I was involved, BMW had a specific customer helpdesk created to smooth things over but this was only accessable to Joe Public once the normal processes had been in action for a while. BMW's normal customer service just routes you back to the dealer as you've probably found out.

What are the issues with the bike that you are complaining about? I met a few guys that were trying to insist on a replacement bike because of various warrantee issues, that had in fact been dealt with well enough by BMW's (very good IMO) warrantee anyway:nenau

Thanks guys, as you were. After a few problems I have just been offered a new bike.

I would fully support Sheps advice.

So your original post in which you stated "Just thinking aloud really" wasn't strictly true then? :augie

Good observation, but at the time of posting I was thinking aloud. I had major doubts that anyone got offered new bikes from BMW.

Then things moved very fast for me, and knowing what others had achieved helped me to have the confidence to fight.

I got offered a replacement Rocket III by Triumph back in March 2005 but fortunately they didn't have any free stock available for immediate delivery so I got my money back instead

Solution

Maybe start a pole if you want exact numbers. :nenau

Then get someone clever to transcribe the figues onto a spreadsheet or the like. After that the possibilities are endless (am thinking barcharts piecharts etc).

But as your issue is now sorted can't see the point myself unless you what to waste a shedload of time on the internet. :D

I used to own a G1200GS hence my continuing presence on this site. My current problems were with a G650GS which I guess is of limited interest to the good people here.

To cut a long story short, a problem starting the bike when hot led to it being in the workshop for over 4 weeks.

During this time it had 4 new camshafts, three sets of valve lift counterweights and springs, new starter solenoid, new starter motor, new high current cables to the battery, high temperature investigation of mechanical parts and a new cam chain tensioner.

After all this it wouldn't start at all and has been replaced by a new bike.

The story has been played out here, if you are interested.

What do you suppose they do with the bikes they take back

Crush em, or fix them and sell them on :eek:eek

In the UK the bikes are placed in the BMW dealer pool at an attractive price and can be bought by any dealer that believes he can fix them.

They then find themselves back on sale as second hand bikes.

I dont see an issue with that as they come with guarantees. All bikes can eventually be repaired at a cost but replacement by BMW is often about customer good will, which thankfully does still exist.
