Update to this thread

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=186237

After having the FPC pack in at 80mph in the fast lane of the M1 last weekend, Just had a call from Roy Gardner to say that there is nothing wrong with the clutch slave cylinder. However, the gearbox oil seal is leaking and has probably contaminated the clutch.

The bike is just under 3 years old with 14000 miles on the clock.

I will be on the phone to bmw motorrad looking for a goodwill gesture as soon as I am able.

I have had nothing but trouble with this bike. Would it be ethical to sell with the seal weeping if BMW dont do the decent thing?

I will probably never buy another BMW after the problems I have had, and I am sure my friends in my local biking fraternity will not buy a BMW either.

I take it BMW treats the buyer with the same contempt?

Do you mean do they sell a bike knowing that particular bike has a fault?

I doubt it, but they aren't careful enough with the product quality sometimes, and that they must know.

FPC's, final drives and leaking seals are known faults. If joe public knows of these faults (all be it after it has happened to their bike) then surely to god BMW must be aware of these faults too??

We pay a premium price for a perceived reliable make and product, we should expect to get what we have paid for. Is that too much to ask? I fear BMW will soon get a reputation for building unreliable motorcycles.

Soon? I think you'll find they have had that reputation for a while, however they have also got a reputation for operating a very good solus dealer network and warrantee system, and their reputation for goodwill gestures being offered is second to none.

So for me its all a bit 'swings and roundabouts' yes some people have some problems then again when a warrantee claim get submitted it gets dealt with very professionally and generously in most cases. That more than I can say for anyother manufacturer I've had the dubious pleasure of dealing with.

I'm not sure that I perceive BMW as an unreliable brand - they've sold 500,000 bikes, with the advent of the internet, it's not hard to find 50 people who've had issues - or 0.01% Seems pretty good to me. Then factor in how hard "most" dealers work to take care of us, I think they are pretty good. Certainly - my 40k bike just managed 4k in 9 days without a single problem. For many, that equates to a years use... in a long week.

With regards the OP's question - the replacing the seal is something like 3/400 pounds. It's not ideal it's gone - but these things happen. Pay up and then either sell or use it some more. That's what I did 15k miles ago and life is good :thumb2

Sorry I didn't mean to indicate it was a wholly deserved reputation regarding reliability, but you have to admit FPC's F/D's and R/A's are a common fault on recent models and finish has been poor for some time on some components. But i can say i've been very happy with their reaction to warrantee claims i've needed to make, and this always has poured oil on the troubled waters when I had problems in the past.

I need to go dig out my receipts... what price have you been quoted so far and did it include replacing the clutch? They thought there was a risk of mine being infected but it wasn't so they didn't need to do it.

OK, all I can find (while technically on conf calls for work :augie ) is the quote, not the invoice, which included the clutch work. Trying to decipher and seperate out the seal work, it looks like 252 +VAT for the labour plus about 20 quid for the seals...

It might be worth actually checking with your BMW dealer.
