Updated GS/GSA for late 2017

I think it's too expensive, if you have a Nav v or VI apart from it being clearer what are you getting extra for your £600??

Plus my head shape doesn't find the BMW helmets fit properly!

Got that, I wonder if the screen is included in the TE spec. although it isn't listed.

Almost certainly (both gs and gas) - you wouldn't be offered the emergency and teleservices otherwise? For the GS te, it's just 155 more than the outgoing.

Absolutely agree! Even the electronic suspension is unnecessary in my view. Nothing wrong with turning the wheel to adjust the rear shock (and standard GSs still have the same wheel used for years). cruise control is great and the gear shift blipper is handy, but everything else (keyless ride and digi screens etc) is just 'noise'!

I used to think that about electronic suspension BUT suspension that automatically adjusts the damping works very well on the TE especially when two up, it really is worth having because it's too difficult to adjust the rebound screw when your riding :).

I suspect that we have gone beyond the point of useful electronics on bikes now, but the manufacturers have fallen into a trap of their own making - time for a revolt against all his pointless stuff that no one needs but it's cheap for the manufacturer to add in and mark up enormously, we need a back to basics campaign that concentrates on dynamic performance and quality.

I embrace all of these new features and I'd like to see them add in a proper GPS. I cannot see any downsides to any of it.

My first GSXR made a mere 115 BHP but it was delivered with all the finesse of a head butt

Too much gas in the dry and it would shove the rev counter through your visor, too much in the wet or leaned over and it would spin up like a bastard. The brakes were ferociously good too but no ABS appart from your two fingers and your optimism

Sports bikes make 200 BHP these days, I wonder how rideable they would be without all the electronic aids to keep you safe?

What are you getting? Well for any buyer who didn't want to stretch to the Nav 6, it will give basic nav instructions (driven from the BMW smartphone app). That's a good thing.

The contrary aspect is; For anyone who buys a Nav 6 for their (TFT screen) bike there is a tremendous lot of "overlap" (phone, music and nav functionality) between the TFT and the Garmn Nav 6 unit itself.

It may look attractive, but I think the two units developed by Garmin and BMW simultaneously and separately have arguably given the customer a bit of a "lashup".

I've seen nothing to suggest that the TFT display is compatible with other Bluetooth headsets, so it appears that to actually use all the features you need a helmet with BMW Communications System fitted, and a compatible smartphone running and connected to the display at all times. That means you need to find somewhere to stash the smartphone while preferably having it connected to a USB power source, as running location services dependent apps on a phone tends to be power hungry, and in my experience also tends make phones run hot so you need to keep it somewhere where it won't overheat. So what appears to be a nice simple built in way to get a basic GPS facility is not really that simple at all.

So in Summary, its a colour TFT screen which shows all the same information as the Nav VI. Except Revs and a non-GPS Speed reading alternative (Just to contradict the other colour Nav Speed reading).

I do actually like the TFT screen, but only in addition to the Nav VI, and only because the old screen is pretty useless.

Then, the only real benefit I can see is being able to see the Revs more clearly?

The Nav VI is better positioned for line of sight, and my Nav VI shows me my GPS Speed and the speed limit next to each other. So its Dynamic and very useful.

But its another gadget, so its stamped APPROVED.

If anyone can find out how easy this TFT Gadget can be retrofitted and plumbed in to 3 month 'old bikes' that would be interesting.

It isn't just TFT, LHS switchgear is different to (as in what it does) it also (if you look closer) has black buttons unlike non TFT bike still using grey buttons. Pay close attention to the LHS rocker switch next to the NAV wheel, it has different graphic on it specifically to operate TFT menu. I might be wrong, but I do know that switchgear has been tweaked/altered to work with TFT.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

The system also has to have the facility to switch the focus of the multi-controller wheel back and forth between TFT and Nav - this was mentioned in the incredibly poorly presented video. This would probably not be possible for a bike not designed with this in mind.

Yes video presentation was awful to say the least.

Ah well. Enjoy your new 2017 TFT bikes, I'm out.

Just have to ride about on my old 2017 knacker.
