AM CURRENTLY ON TURKISH / BULGARIAN BORDER AND AN INCIDENT HAS BROKEN OFF THE PLASTIC ELECTRONIC DEVICE WHICH PLUGS INTO THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE BIKE, NEAR WHAT LOOKS LIKE THE FUEL INJECTION, NEAR LEFT BOOT AS YOU SIT ON BIKE.

ENGINE RUNS BUT WONT LIFT ENGINE SPEED ABOVE IDLE IN NEUTRAL BUT RUNS OK IN ALL GEARS. ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT ON ALL TIME ALSO.

AM PLANNING TO RIDE TO iSTANBUL TOMMOROW And hopefully obtain spare.

Question is is it ok to ride the bike like this.

MY guess is its something to do with engine ermmisions and wont cause damage to run it but looking for confirmation. Will chech to see if anyone can confirm this tommorow in Istanbul. Is this a part likely to be stocked by the Istanbul BMW dealer.

Apologies for punctation and spelling but typing on scrounged pc with bulgarian alphabet.

Cheers guys:)

aha!

sounds like the throttle position sensor to me,held on by 2 small torx screws
(until it snaps off anyway)
no.4 on the fuel preparation, throttle housing assembly page?

Cheers guys - it was as you thought above - the plastic sensor held on by 2 torx bolts - man from BMW he say 'idle control sensor'. Managed to locate one at Istanbul dealer and fitted it. Although bike ran ok without it at speed it had little torque at low revs. Made finding the Turkoman (For those that know it) rather interesting.

Thanks for your help

Just a thought - do I need to do anything to reset the sensor or is it ok to just fit and ride.

I guess it's throttle position sensor. More likely to damage in an accident than the idle control device. BMW RepROM says "There is no need to reset the throttle-valve potentiometer after assembly (self-teaching system)."
