USB power outlet?

Just fitted an autocom system to my 09 GSA, followed some great advice on here and ended up wiring in a splitter to the underseat power outlet to run the intercom. Soldered it and used heatshrink to make a nice neat job.

Anyway this got me thinking are there any issues with wiring in a USB outlet to the bike maybe from the headstock power outlet. I'd mainly use this to run/charge my mobile which doubles as my mp3 player (iPhone).

I have searched the forum and can't find USB mentioned. Something like this I was thinking: http://www.powerlinkproducts.co.uk/usbachargingsocket.html

Any thoughts? If I did this could I also power a garmin if I buy one later or would I be limited to one or the other?

That's an idea, but rather than wire in a cigarette lighter socket id like to put a dedicated USB socket in instead.

It seems straightforward but just after some advice really

I've got this setup on my bikes. Old school, so no canbus (1150 and 1100) . I have them set up so they are on a switched circuit through a centec aux fuse box. Works well so far! Perfect for charging things like camera batteries, I-pod etc etc.

I have the one in the first link. Its spot on and the seller was also very good. I use it to power my HTC phone and car sat nav which I use on the bike in a waterproof case.

I wired up a marine cigarette lighter socket from eBay to the socket near the headstock. Tesco are banging out usb adapters that are really small and have 2 usb outlets. I thick they ate about 7 notes. It works for me an my HTC

I like the look of option 1 above as well. My 09 bike has the canbus system so what is the best way to put it in? I was thinking either centech fuse box straight from the battery, or wiring from the headstock outlet. I'd only consider this if I could still power a satnav later when Santa brings one!

Thanks, having read other posts the way to go is to use either a centec fuse box or 6 output connector with integral relay like the fx-1 at fuzeblock.com then run my USB etc from that.

However if I power this from the aux socket I assume I will be limited to a maximum power draw, so is it ok to run the fuse box directly from the battery or will this upset the canbus system?

You could piggy back from the aux socket supply, if it is like the F650GS the canbus socket will supply up to 5A. A GPS will take 2A tops, and the USB socket 1A max so no problems with amount of juice available.

ps the USB socket output is fairly low so would only be capable of powering one device, it wouldn't have enough to power a standard GPS directly from the USB socket either.
