I am not familiar with the detailed design of the Boxer so this may not apply. But I always understood that the real risk with overfilling was that the crank would touch the oil surface and whip up an oil froth. Your bearings would then get a flow of air and oil - and the air would kill them.
Personally, I wouldnt worry too much about oil consumption as long as you didnt have a cloud of blue smoke behind you. Its only relatively recently that engines have stopped using much oil, and there isnt really any benefit except perhaps to the environment. As long as there is sufficient oil in the engine, you're OK.
