Here and there.....
Hi Guys, now i know gs's are known for using a lot of oil but can you tell me if this is normal.

Just had 600 mile service last week, noted that after service oil level was half way up window. now 260 miles later just checked it and NO oil in sight . Now assuming the oil level is just below the window, does anyone know how much oil it will take to fill it,(obviously i'll find out when i top it up tomorrow) I'm guessing it must be at least half a pint. So my question is, is it normal to use at least half a pint per 250 miles? I'm off to france next week will do approx 2000 miles. A minimum of half a gallon of oil seems slightly excessive. :(

sorry to mention oil again, promise not to ask what oil to put in it!:blast

When I bought my 05 GS the dealer told me to expect up to a litre per 1000 miles on a new bike but as it would run OK on chip fat it only needed cheap oil anyway. That was close to right but after about 10000 miles it used almost nothing and it used very little oil 'till it was PXed in 09.

Conversely the GSA that replaced it has used almost no oil in 6000 miles.

Probably not a useful answer but maybe it shows that new bikes can vary and high oil usage is possible.

Prepare for piss-taking/use the search type replies.

I was rather worried about the amount of oil my new '09 12GS was using, which, like yours, seemed rather a lot. After around 1k miles things seemed to settle down, now it hardly uses any. Done 8k now.
Don't worry about it, carry a litre with you for peace of mind. I did at first but I don't bother now.
Enjoy the bike :)

FWIW I'm still using 1-2 litres of oil in 6000 miles. That usage has been fairly constant over 30000 mles.

So use oil and some don't.....

My first GSA was a bit thirsty, this one doesn't use a drop :nenau

Must be the type of oil being used :hide

mine was exactly the same used lots of oil to start with,up to 4000 miles now and is getting better all the time.

How long had the engine been turned off when you checked it....

Exactly - you need to ride for an hour and park up - check the level after 5 mins on the main stand. Make sure you are standing on one leg with your right index finger in your left ear. Dont be in a hurry to a. believe the sight glass and b. fill up. I wouldn't mind betting that most BMs don't use oil - just the overfill that their owners keep throwing in.:rob

I noticed it was down shortly after using it, but left it overnight thinking it may be slow to settle. But nothing happened.

Someone asked what oil i use:blast

20/50 mineral the guy put in it, i've never put any in..........yet!:thumb2

Mine used loads early on, but it's now 9 months old with 7.5k on it and now uses no oil. :comfort;)

I had to top my 2010 GSA up BEFORE the 600 mile service. Now done about 950 miles and it looks like it's going to need topping up again real soon.
Somewhere in the manual it tells you how much oil it takes to fill from minimum in the spy glass to maximum, I think it's 500ml, but I'm sure someone will be along soon to clarify or correct me if I'm wrong. You have to check the spy glass when the engine's up to full running temperature, bike on it's centre stand on a level surface, and 5 mins after stopping the bike.
As for the grade of oil, i got shot down asking this on a post, but everyone seems to have their own opinion, and a lot say mineral. Bottom line, it doesn't really matter I don't think. However, I asked my dealer, and then double checked with them again, and they say 20/50 semi synthetic. That's what they use, and that's what they recommend to fill up with.
