A picture of the usual which I have decided I will do myself. A few questions, what is the best way to remove the corrosion?
what is the best paint/colour to use?
and is the cover easy to get off and will the screws need re tightening by torque wrench?

Some info here.

I think the cover will be a fairly big job to get off as it has a gasket behind it & you'll need a puller to remove the belt pulley.

I plan to do mine in situ as in the above link.

done mine without removing cover .cleaned off corrosion with stainless steel wire brush and wet and dry .just masked around casing edges and painted with smooth hamerite.

Sorry, I think I meant removing the front plastic cover and not the engine cover, just checking there was nothing difficult in doing that

Hi there, if you decide to remove the front cover its really not that much of a big deal, and would be happy to lend you my puller if you decided to do it yourself, there isnt a gasket behind the cover as its a flush fit metal to metal joint with a bit of gasket sealant behind it.

So dont be scared to rip it off and give it a proper job instead of a just a quick fix.

Anyway if you need a hand let me know

Mark.

mark is that a bmw specific puller or a universal 2 or 3 leg puller?

Removing the plastic cover is very easy as long as you have the torx keys or sockets. No tricks or surprises - four screws and you're done.

Torque wrench isn't essential - 5Nm I beleive, which is "fairly tight with a screwdriver" or "not very tight with a ratchet."
