I've just carried out a 12,000 miles service on my bike and had to change five valve shims because they were way out of the permitted tolerances (too much play).

Has anyone else had to change shims after 12,000 miles?

Changing shims necessitates removing the cam shafts which although not difficult to do takes time. Bearing in mind come dealers give a fixed cost for servicing does anyone know 'fussy' they are in sticking to the allowed tolerances?

I also had to re-shim two of four valves on my Honda CRF250 @ only 600 miles because they were too tight.

A four cylinder bike with 16 valves could be very expensive.

Are you sure that the camshafts have to be removed? The shims sit on top of the valves and not in buckets.

Yes cams have to be removed to change shims but it's no big deal to do. What is a pain in the arse however is having to order shims which the delays putting bike back together for a couple of days. Top end of cylinders is definitely quieter now clearences are back within tolerances.
