Trust me I have searched for this answer on here and on the rest of the tinterweb.....
I have ordered a Varta YTZ14S-BS battery for my 2010 1200GS from my local Lucas House bods. their catalogue listed this battery as the suitable replacement battery for a 2010 bike. I'm due to pick it up tomorrow as it has arrived in stock but I have realized that it is about 40mm shorter than the oem battery! Dimensions being 110 high instead of approx 150mm high on the battery in my bike (other two dimensions look okay).

Have they ordered the wrong battery? Will it fit securely? Or is it okay but will I need to pack it out??

My research shows that the Yuasa YTZ14S is a popular replacement and is also only 110mm high. Lots of sites mention these batteries in the same breath as a 1200GS but no one seems to mention the height difference!!!

Any advice gratefully received before I collect this new battery tomorrow.

Many thanks

Neil

40mm seems alot as the OEM battery is already sitting on a stand. I would want to get it sitting where the stock one sits making sure the terminals are clear of the frame work.

If it's the stock it sits on a stand maybe 30mm high
I have a stand in my shed that I took of when I put my odyssey battery in.

Nope mine has a battery approx 150mm tall and no spacer. I have had it since 1,550 miles so I think it's the original.

Then with the battery your buying you'll need a spacer bud

Mine was a yuasa in a GSA 09 till I changed it for a 625 odyssey

The Exide on my 2005 GS that I used to replace my OE (Exide) battery is 14.5cm high.

Could you not space yours up with some 2"x1" and ply or similar??

Are you kidding? Your kidding right?

Instead of paying £10 for the proper part!

Why not just sit it on top of an old flora tub :)

That does sound a bit ghetto! I bought part 4 the bracket it was about 15 quid so 10 for both parts is a good deal.

Thanks to you all for your help, especially Cammy5477.
I went in to Lucas House this evening and explained my dilemma. The guy behind the counter checked again and noted that the correct battery was the YTX14s bs and had one in stock 12ah and 200a which was cheaper than the YTZ14! This one is exactly the right dimensions. The YTZ14 is not the wrong battery they list both depending I presume, on whether you have the spacers or not.

Thanks again Cammy had they not resolved it in the shop I would have been in touch with your kind offer.

Wood was not an option:barf

Hey Cammy, did you have any problems with your Odyssey battery? I bought a 2nd hand 2007 GSA about 2yrs ago and knew the battery was a bit dodgy (had to call AA out to a campsite to get me going last year, charging circuit was ok so thought battery wasn't holding charge very we'll) so kept it charging every night with an Optimate 4 until I replaced it recently with an Odyssey. She'd only been sat in the garage for a few night so imagine my surprise when I went to flash her up the other night to find battery was flat? I had taken off the charging lead as I thought the Odyssey was man enough for a few weeks at least! I need to check the charging circuit again etc and will refit the charging lead, once I've worked out how to programmer the Optimate 4 to sequence the can-bus! I'd be grateful for any tips to crack this one, I'm hoping it's not an electronic gremlin that'll keep me off road all summer!

Hey bazzer I've not had any issues yet mate touch wood.
Does sound like your alternator is a bit dodgey. Make sure with the bike running your getting around 14.4v on the battery with a multimeter.

Connect the charger DIRECTLY to the battery. DO NOT use the can bus/aux plug. It's not reliable enough. There's plenty of info on here about it.
