Hi all, this question relates to the fuel gauge/oil temp display on the right of the clocks on an 1100gs.

My Red GS does not have the display fitted, however it does have an oil temp sensor fitted, although I am unable to see whether there is a fuel sender unit installed in the tank.
My question is, did BMW fit the gear indicator, fuel sender and oil temp sensor regardless of whether the VDO was specified at the time of manufacture, and therefore, can I fit a VDO and expect it to work fully or not?

Thanks for your time.

I can't speak for the R1100, but usually the main wiring loom will have the connecter at the headstock (under the tank) which the Rider Information Display (RID) connects.

Have a look. It will likely be an 8 way connector coloured grey with nothing connected to it. If it's there, then you should be good to connect up a RID.

But is there a level gauge in the tank and a gear indicator on the gearbox?

Isn't the fuel gauge sender unit common across the R1100 / R1150 GS range. There is only one part no for it. The fuel gauge sender unit incorporates the low level fuel switch, which will be the only part of it used on the OP's bike.

The neutral light switch and gear selector switch are seperate items on the R1100GS, so there might not be the gear selector switch fitted, but a glance underneath will confirm that, as there should be two seperate cables coming from the rear of the gearbox, one for each switch.

Excellent, that's the info I was looking for, I'll have to look at this at the weekend, Friday probably as I'm in the middle of taking my exams for commercial gas qualifications and need to focus my limited brain power to that for the next couple of days.

Many thanks. :thumb2

I fitted one to my 850 not long after I bought it. It just plugged in on the headstock and everything worked straight off. Hardest job was cutting the panel out neatly.

Right then, just to finish off the thread, I fitted a s/h RID kindly supplied by Vern, and it all worked perfectly, so just in case anyone needs to know in the future, BMW obviously fit the fuel tank sender unit, the oil temp sensor and gear indicator switch regardless of whether yoiu order the RID at the time of purchase or not.

Thanks again Vern :thumb

I've seen a few 1150's for sale in Germany without the RID so it appears from what you have said that it's an easy fix.

Yes, the 1100 was first registered in Germany and the first I had seen without the RID, perhaps they don't like to spend the extra, but it's nice to have the extra info for sure.
A dremmel works well to cut a hole in the binnacle, and the RID simply plugs in under the tank.
