Very Fed up with my 2012 1200 GS

Ok long story short , swapped by 1150gs for a 2012 1200gs triple black with 11500 miles on it , rode it 200 miles home at the start of March and noticed a hot oily smell and when I looked there was oil on the rear of the engine/ gearbox joint and dripped on the bash plate , the bike was an ex bmw uk one and was 30 days out of warranty ,the dealer I bough it from was fab and said no problem get it to bmw near me and have it sorted at no cost to me. They had the bike 2 weeks and said the crank rear oil seal and gearbox input oil seals were replaced as well as the clutch apparently this bike had sat in a showroom for a year and they think the seals had degraded in that time. Got the bike back and after about 200 miles the oil was back in the same place again !!. The dealer has it back at the moment and has been told that I am supposed to be going to France on it in 3 weeks. The bike is on finance and I paid a lot of money for it , as you can imagine I am well F*!ked off with it. Your thoughts please

Simple. They didnt repair it properly the first time round. No help to you but the problem you describe isnt common at all. Where you go from here is between you and the dealer.

Ok Guys Update time

I rang the BMW dealer who I am very tempted to name , bearing in mind the bike was picked up last Wed giving them Thurs , Fri , Sat Morning , Mon And Tues (rang at 4pm) to look at it and order the parts/ let me know what they found to be told "It is going in the workshop tomorrow sir" , "to be reassembled ?" I asked "no to be looked at sir , we are currently booking bikes in with a 2 week delay and we are trying to fit yours in" I said "you know I am going to France on it in 2 weeks !!" ..."yes we do sir" was the answer . To be honest I was stunned which was lucky for him because I would have probably told him "you Fu*ked it up the 1st time you better well F*!cking fix it pronto" NOT VERY HAPPY

generalconfusion

Try to keep positive and look on the bright side. You have bought a great bike. It clearly has a fault but it is being rectified (again). I'm sure the workshop involved will be looking at all the possible reasons for this second failure and will be more than delighted to blame a bigger problem e.g. Gearbox or drive issues so that they don't look so foolish for getting the first seal wrong. What I am trying to say is that if there is a more serious underlying fault they will most likely identify it now and you will be best placed to decide on the best way forward. Equally they might just be more careful this time and do a rolls royce job.

Once back put a few miles on it and satisfy yourself all is well and enjoy your trip. Try not to let it play on your mind. As you have stated you have roadside assistance but as a result will not need it. I have just been away on my 2010GS and loved it. I hope yours grows on you and you can look back and laugh about your earlier setback.

Bon voyage

Neil

Would you trust a franchised dealer that has already had the bike once to rectify a fault and has apparently not even managed to identify it correctly , where will it stop and will the selling dealer ( not a bmw dealer) authorise potentially large amounts of money to correctly rectify the underlying fault.

My personal view would be not to chase up the workshop but the supplying dealer and put pressure on them because they are the ones you have any comeback with.

Make it clear that is recquired for a holiday and that if it is not repaired to a satisfactory standard you will recquire a full refund as the bike is not of merchantable quality and that if it causes cancellation of a holiday you will be pursuing them for recompense

Tell them to take a close look at the Balancer Shaft oil seal. There was a batch of 2012 TB's that had a problem with these.

oil leak

I too have a R1200GS triple black. Bought new May 2012. Discovered an oil 'mist' around the joint between engine and box. Not dripping. BMW (Jeffries) replaced 2 or 3 seals, balancer and engine output shaft included plus the clutch under warranty at about 9000 miles and 1 year old. Leak has not re appeared in a year of riding, although engine smells of oil when hot now but no sign of even the smallest leak.

Ok Guys Update time , the bike came back the second time from the BMW dealers with 5 days to spare for the holiday , the dealer admitted they had messed up the 1st repair but were vague about what. Did 1500 miles in Normandy with no problems , done another 1000 since home and all fine , had it Serviced (12000) by motoscot near luton then off to Hilltop for a remap , went in with 77 bhp at the rear wheel and 55 ft lbs came out with 101 bhp and 80 ft lbs . Bike runs much smoother now pleased with it

Should change the thread title to "Used to be fed up with my 2012 1200GS" :D Glad you got it sorted and are happy with it now.

Really pleased the bike is running well. Good result.

Ummmmm ........ went in with 77 and came out with 101. And no parts were changed? Really? I'd take a HUGE pinch of salt with that. Just my view.
