I tried to start my 08 1200 Adv but it seemed the battery was flat. Charged battery but very slow cranking and after 2/3 attempts it acted like a flat battery.
Purchased a Mottobat as recommended on here, charged for 24hrs on optimate as instructions.
Fitted it this morning and after 2/3 attempts acts like its a flat battery. It really doesn't want to turn over quick enough and fire up.
Does anyone please have any idea on the way forward?
Cheers

I would first off measure the voltage in the battery. If it is low then it could be the charging circuit. To double check also measure battery voltage when the bike is running and it should be close to 13.8v. If the battery level is fine and it's charging fine it could be the starter. I'm not sure if the 1200's have the same issues of the magnets and grease plate becoming unstuck like the 1150's?

i had the same problem on my 08 adv ex ors,new starter motor and all was well.

Well tried 2 batteries now so decided to get my monies worth out of BMW extended warranty. Its on its way to the CW hospital.
Worryingly CW said they have had problems with Optimate chargers not fully charging batteries:blast

Hope its not that, but have used it to charge other batteries ok.
Anyway CW have a new starter motor and will no doubt restore the gas to full health in due course.

The saga continues.............

Good that you've got the warranty - let the dealer sort it.
In reality, the bike should keep its own battery charged. In practice, chargers are a good idea and lots of people use optimates so I think the dealer is trying to wriggle...

Were the battery terminals tight and clean?

The source of many problems that Iv had plenty of bikes with rotten terminals on batt & solanoid, why place them in line of crud n water every manufacture has done this on their bikes :blast

Take a Gold Star autogs:clap
Had a call from CW in Dorchester today. The starter motor is indeed boll*xed. The down side is BMW don't keep one in the UK so a Lancaster is on its way to pick one up in Germany, or maybe China?

Taken as positive perhaps starter motors are reliable "usually"

sounds like the problem I just had on my 1100GS. Even though it had very low miles (just over 4k) the planetary gear cover had managed to come loose inside the starter assembly, and contact, albeit lightly, with the motor winding, causing a short. I can't believe they are still having the same issues! Mine's 15 years old. Good luck with the new one. :aidan

So it's been Polaxed ;)
Worn brushes will prevent the motor from working effectively.
The starter motor case is attached by bolts from the non drive end of the motor.
It might only need new brushes or even a good clean.
