Hi Guys
I am trying to make up my mind whether to trade in my trusty Honda VFR800 of 38,000miles for a GS12
I have been for a demo ride and was very impressed
But I am still worried I might regret making an expensive change
I am probably just bored of the VFR which still does everything I really need
I need convincing it’s a wise change
Thanks for help

Hi mogster,

Just been through the same painful process. Got rid of the VFR and got myself a GS1150. Even the trip down to the shops is fun on it.

You Go Get It Boy

Well.........

I've got both. My 22K mile '99 FiW which I've had from new.....Ohlins shock, VTec forks, braided hoses, Power Commander, Yoshimura can, Corbin seat, double bubble screen....you get the idea......and my Dec. '04 6K mile 1200.

The GS is a hoot to ride, no question. However, it appears to be more fragile in some respects and potentially, less reliable.

The VFR hasn't been perfect. It had porous coolant elbows in the V of the block which caused some problems and it had the obliagatory reg/rec failure. However, at 3K miles the GS had new front discs and pads under warranty because the front disc runout exceeded the service spec. It's just out of the dealers where it spent the best part of a week having two new cylinder heads and a front engine casing fitted, again under warranty, to replace the originals which had suffered corrosion at the icy fingers of a Scottish winter in spite of liberal applications of FS365 and regular washing.

So, in summation....the GS is a great ride but it's potentially less reliable and more of a hassle to keep running sweetly than the VFR. Should I mention that it's also more comfortable, about 10 mpg more economical, a fair bit slower.......etc, etc.?

Hi,

I traded in my 30000mile VTEC for GS1200 last March. In terms of bike I dont regret trading in the VFR as the GS1200 is much more suited to me than the VFR.

However in the 2.5 years I had the VFR I never had a single problem, with the GS Ive had problems with the ABS system (eventually required complete system to be relaced ie sensors, wiring loom and ABS control box). Then I had problems with the fuel gauge failing. This has all been fixed but I was disappointed in having such major work done on a brand new bike.

Mogster,
I am sure that your VFR is just boring, as they do everything perfectly and reliable too.
However, life is too short to be riding a boring bike, isn't it?
I would humbly suggest you try a GS1150 before you decide, that will be £2k cheaper than a new 1200 and I rate it as the best bike. If you are tall enough the Adv 1150 GS is also very nice, they are a bit too tall for me.
Give them a try before you go giving all that new bike VAT to Gordon Brown.
There are reliability questions with the 1200GS which are all well documented on this forum.
Barrie.

Hi Mogster

Traded my 800VFR (pre-V-tec) last October for the 1200GS - have not regretted it one little bit, had become quite jaded with the Honda. Now every ride is a hoot.

loads and loads of ex VFR Guys on here I,m another, Its been 3 years now on an 1150 and NO regrets, It did take a while to get "into" it, But the Gs will do nearly every thing that the VFR will do, and most things a lot better, the first time you get a corner right on the GS will keep you smiling for weeks!! go get one.
Chris

The two bike I had before the GS12 was a VFR750 ('95) and the Vtec ('02). Loved them both, then made the mistake of having a demo on the 12. It took a year (and several test rides on different machinery) before I took delivery of my GS. Simply put, I haven't looked back. :D

remember that silver is the best in handling and speed.
GS1150....do it!!

Went from VFR to 1150 then 1200. Will probably keep the 1200 now for a while, but really regret selling the VFR. Now looking for another VFR at the moment as a second bike. If you can afford to keep both then do it.

As posted elsewhere, I am looking for a 2nd bike. Have an 1150GS and want a VFR too... Although Mrs Bagpuss is not with the programme at the moment... :eek

I too had a VFR 800 which served me well for 20,000 miles. After a major lifestyle change I changed it for a once in lifetime bike (well for me anyway) and got an Aprilia Mille R. Now that was different.

Now I have a GS1200 and I have no doubts that (for me) the GS is a much better bike than the VFR.

My VFR was not quite the paragon of reliability that some claim for the model. New front discs and pads at about 3k miles; the trademark RR change, a replacement battery in the first year and corrosion issues that meant you really, really had to keep on top of things during the winter - and the bike was nearly ready for a downpipe/collector box change at approaching 3 years.

Whhat you will get with the GS compared to a VFR is a lot more torque and very useful that is too. And significantly more miles to the litre/gallon - around 50 compared to 42 in my experience.

Visibility is better, both from your perspective looking out for things and for others who stand more chance of noticing you - but make no assumptions about the blindness of others. The first makes things more relaxed whatever speed you choose. The GS is slower in top speed terms than the VFR, but I suspect that real word riding, day in day out, would paint a different picture.

You say "I need convincing it’s a wise change". All others can do is provide info. Up to you what you make of it. After all, I could be clinically insane and never have ridden a bike in my life. Come to think of it ....

Saw a signature block once that caught the eye - The internet has given new respectability to uninformed opinion :) .

Whatever you choose you won't be a million miles away. Both are good bikes and sensible choices, and both can be hooligans if that's your inclination.

Get yourself a GS and keep the VFR. I kept my Yamaha as I had spent time and money getting her nice and she ain't worth a lot in money terms but is too nice to just 'give away'. I have kept her for fast road and track use, a dyno tuning session is booked for next week as I enjoy using that rev hungry motor.

I just rode the GS to the dealers this evening on a very busy biking road (A32 Fareham to Alton) and reminded myself how different my GS is yet how easy it is to get a massive grin.

I may sell the Yamaha one day................then again maybe not. :mmmm

Another ex VFR800 rider here, I had the pre V-Tech model and I kept the bike for about a year and had a lot of problems.

Constantly vibrating front end which after much expense was never cured so the bike went. Also had the dreaded collector box disintergrate when trying to remove the silencer. :(

I went from that to an Africa Twin which was great and reliable but prone to quite bad corrosion. I have recently traded the Africa Twin in against a 2001 GS1150. :D

Fantastic handling bike and a constant grin on ones face. :)

Not the silky smooth V4 of the VFR but it has bags of character and really will go almost anywhere you point it. Fantastic cruising 6th gear as well. At 85mph the engine is reving at just under 4000rpm.

Good luck with what ever you decide.

Jon :D

I agree your trade in price on the vfr will be pants , hang onto it.
I had the aniversary vfr and the vtec and they are top fun and far from boring.

now have a GS ADV fantastic bike.

Hi

I just changed from a VFR to a 12GS on Sat and like you was having doubts. Bit worried about the reliability problems you guys keep mentioning but have to say in the 200 miles or so I am sure I have done the right thing.

The VFR was a great bike but I had the same old problems every else had steering head bearings, RR, front end. I ended up trading it in. Yes I know, but I really couldn't afford to keep both bikes, along with convincing SWMBO that 2 bikes was a good idea, consideirng its just a hobby and not my main transport.

The GS provides lots of grins, feels planted and I feel as if I could go on forever. I am really happy. But in the end its up to you. I f I were you, I would do it, cos you will always be lloking over the other side of the fence.

Vtech to 850 GS

Hi,

Sold my 02 VFR ABS last month and bought a rare, mint 850 GS , Absolutely love it to bits, might have to trade up for the 1150 soon, as she struggles a little at the top end, but cornering and town work is an absolute dream!! Get it swapped

Steve :)

Bought an 1150 Adv to compliment the VFR 800 and I am really glad that I din't get rid of the Honda. Rode the GS pretty well exclusively through the winter but by the time summer came and I got back on the VFR the GS wound up going out less and less and then only cause I wanted an off road session.

Sold the GS a couple of weeks ago, its a great bike but IMHO the VFR is the better road bike and I have bought a proper off roader.

As to the economics of ownership

VFR bought as a non runner for 400 quid three years ago, took 300 quid to get it on the road all serviceing done by myself and 60,000 miles covered so cost per mile (excluding petrol) of 1.5p

GS bought for 7000 sold for 7100 milage 13000 services BMW dealer (6K, On buying, 12k annual and 18 K) total £1100 ish cost per mile (less petrol) 7.6p
