Hi all, I bought my 2006 1200gs in June and the engine vibration / noise is getting steadily worse.
It has been serviced twice since I got it, had the sync, valves and plugs / coils all checked, to no avail.

Two experts have said it's too noisy and 2 dealers have said, some of them are like that.

The noise is like a ball pein hammer inside the crankcases and comes from the crank area on part throttle or over run.
Really bad at 3000 rpm and gets worse the higher you go.

They don't all do it, I have ridden 4 others that are quiet.
I expect to hear the injector and maybe a bit of valve train, but this is like a diesel!

At 70mph with ear plugs in, it's terrible.

I'm an ex mechanic and if it was a car, I'd say main bearings....

Has anyone experienced the same, and more importantly had it resolved?

I'm fed up being charged for spark plugs and oil that doesn't need changing as incompetent techs play with my bike.

Problem is, I'm in France, my local dealer is useless and the warranty is out in three weeks.

Does anyone have a happy ending to this story??:(

Mine was vibey at 4 -5000 rpm until it had gone past 15,000 miles then it finally run itself in

Not had the noise you describe. If it's the mains or big ends wouldn't it show up if you checked the oil pressue which may be lower than normal? Clearly you'd need to plumb-in a gauge somewhere like the oil pressure switch drilling. Had a look in the oil filter for any signs of metal?

If you can hear it at 70 with ear plugs in it certainly ain't right! No way.

I'd have the lids off and check the valve clearances yourself, just to rule that one out.

Checked the posts on the cam-chain tensioner? Might be worth considering as noises are really hard to pin down to the right place sometimes.

Good luck anyway, hope it's nothing to worry about

I would say that as you've reported the noise within the guarantee period any subsequent failure in year 3 would be covered by BMW as "good will".

I forgot to mention it's done 21000kms now and is getting worse, not quieter.

Noise is worse once hot and less when under load.

I put an engineers stethoscope on the crankcase by the mains and it's like listening to a drum solo.

Cylinders are quiet, apart from usual injector noise.
I have checked valve clearences and rocker end float myself as well as this having been done by two dealers.

I have given up on local dealer who told me it should run on 10-40 synthetic and not 20-50 mineral as almost all Bmw dealers now recommend.
He also tried to explain to me I needed a thinner oil as I live in a hot climate!!!

It's never going back there:spitfire

Last chance at the moment with Monaco dealer who is very pleasant, but promises nothing yet, waiting to hear....

Just interested to know if anyone's had the same problem with a positive resolution??

Goodwill and BMW France are not two terms I would use in the same sentence:blast
