Hi all,

I am was experiencing what felt like the rear brake rubbing when cornering at slow speed, like doing slalom style turns. I was convinced that the rear calliper was loose. When I took a look, it felt like there was quite a lot of play in the sliders, the pins which the pads slide on. Is this normal? The calliper its self is fine.

After a bit of research, people reporting similar problems attribute it to needing a new tyre, I was just convinced it was brake rub, and the what felt like excessive play on the sliders confirmed this.

Is this exactly what a squared/worn tyre would feel like? And the whole brake thing is totally fine?

I am due to get another tyre soon any way. I am only asking as I now need to take the rear calliper off, as I accidentenly pulled the rubber boot of one of the sliders off....and not there is lots of play.

Appreciate any ones advice/comments

Thanks in advance for your help

Simon

Yes I have checked the rear wheel for play, its fine.

OK I think I should just replace the tyre first to eliminate that, its due a new one any way.

Annoyingly I've removed that rubber boot, and I think I have to take the whole calliper off to get it back on!

If the pads are all lose on those pins, that's good. And if caliper is sliding freely on its 'pins' then that too is all good

Yes you'll need to refit that rubber boot you took off - otherwise you'll end up with a new problem, especially with winter on the way.

Sounds like you might have answered your own question. New tyre. Especially if you think it's on the way out. Personally I hate riding with a squared off tyre as it can really throw out the handling. Others may be more tolerant than me

Let us know how you get on with a new tyre. Does the front need changing?

No the front should be OK.

Putting that boot on is proving to not be a 5 minute job already. I can't get to the pins without removing the calliper, and I cant get to the calliper without removing the wheel hugger/mud guard, and the last person to have the bike has rounded the heads which hold the hugger on :anger

Without pictures is hard to understand. But it shouldn't be so hard to remove the hugger? Unless of course the heads habe been rounded off .

But normally, taking of the caliper and fitting that boot should be err...5 min, maybe even less!
