2006 GS - South Africa - Numb Right Hand

I've just found this thread - I've put just over 1,000km on mine, and found the same right hand problem.
The thread seems to have been dead for quite a while - dies anyone have any update on solutions?

David.

Spooky

Right hand bar weight has worked loose, left hand fine

I get the numb hand thing but find that it goes away if you keep going - I've found that turning the heated grips on full sorts the numbness out

Bar weights weren't the problem on my 12GSA, still got the vibes from around 4k onward and if anything the vibration of the right mirror has become noticeably worse at speed now that the bike is approaching 12k miles.

It goes in for its 12k service this week at Ryedales, so I'll comment on it to them in case its something they can checkout ...

As for the heating ... I worked out pretty early on that running the heated grips seems to alleviate the problem, but I think thats down to the heat stimulating the blood flow, in spite of the vibration restricting it, so you are just counteracting the symptom, not a very satisfactory cure! Having said that, I nearly always run on mways now with them on to counter the effect.

I've tried fiddling with the bar position, but the limited adjustment of the grips/levers and handlebar (due mostly to the brace!), make this difficult. I did manage to easy my brake position `round` the bar tho which helped somewhat. Maybe a set of Renthals is called for ...

You'll be pleased to know that the 1200GS engine smooths out remarkably as the miles go on. After 10k miles it is noticably smoother, and after 20k it is quite silky.

I also found the grips too narrow, so wrapped some Karakal squash racket grip tape around the grips. It made the grips feel more like those on the 1150 which are nice and chunky. This stuff costs £2-£4 or so from any decent sports shop selling rackets. It is self-adhesive (but can be removed easily) and has a bit of tape included to wrap the end bit & keep it secure.

You can get many different colours too :D Pimp your ride!

Vibrations

I used to get pins and needles in both hands on my old vfr and even after fitting bar risers it did not go away but alliviated it slightly. I took the advice from somebody that had the tunnel carpel syndrome and was waiting for the op to get some gel gloves like the off road cyclist wear. I got a cheap pair from argos, the ones without fingers and wore them under my gloves. This helped tremendously and prevents the numbness from occouring after 20 miles to a more reasonable 100 miles.
Having changed to the GS I subconciously stopped using them, and with the charging about the hills and lanes to get it run in did not suffer any numbness.
Only after having a 10 mile trip on the motorway did the numbness come back and as soon as I got on the B roads again it stopped.
I feel that a combination of just sitting there grabbing the bars and a constant vibration from the bike can cause the effects, but when you are boogieing down the road you never keep a constant grip or engine speed and the problem is hidden.
Now I am going back to the gel gloves and will travel everywhere on B roads.
Still it proberly something to do with all the car accidents I have had ( none driving ) and my wrecked neck but thats another story

i seem to be having trouble with numbness to the right hand due to the 1200gs ive never had any problems with my 3 previous gs(1150)anybody got any ideas why, was riding my ktm trailbike on sunday no problems all day went for a blast up to dalkeith today numb hand after 40 miles? :(
That was one of the reasons I sold my 1200. I couldn't hold on sometimes it was so bad. It was a high frequency vibration that was terrible. I'm sure in hindsight that different bar end wieghts would have cured it though :nenau
