Vinyl wrap....colour question

I was going to get my GSA top box and panniers vinyl wrapped to prevent corrosion and the throwing the foot over scratches.

The company I've spoken to said they'd wrap the boxes and colour code the beak and tank for a reasonable price. The thing is, I have no problem going for a strong, different colour on the tank and beak....but do you think the boxes would look gay being anything but silver or matte black?

If you wrap the whole bike in plastic and leave it in the shed it'll stay perfect.

If you want to ride it I'd suggest that a little bit of weathering should be considered character.

Each unto their own and all that, but it sounds like a tragic waste of money to me

The thought of that wrapping stuff just doesn't appeal to me at all.

I guess on the panniers isn't so bad, but on the body panels why not take them off and just have them sprayed?

I'm quite fussy on keeping my bike clean...but the panniers have to be taken for what they are..bare alluminium boxes open to the elements.
And like you say they do get boot marks on them..but they can be polished out if you want...but can you do that of the vinyl?

I don't know how much the vinyl costs....but couldn't you save your money and buy some brand new panniers for best?

I do over 30k miles per year on commuting alone. I don't mind a bit of 'wear and tear' but considering the cost of the luggage, I'd rather keep them all as mint as possible. Come resale time, if the wrap can be removed leaving mint luggage beneath....then it'll make it easier for me. Whilst the tank/beak can be sprayed, the next purchaser might want it all OE.

FYI the wrap is about 1/5th of the cost of the panniers. You'd probably spend that on ACF50 and autosol

Seems another Tosser foible that you accept luggage that is, along with fuel gauges/tank range, not up to the job it was very expensively sold to do.

Panniers do a great job of protecting your fully-fuelled heavy "adventure" bike when you fall off it on a cambered road whilst climbing aboard and it hits the high kerb with an almighty crash.

The dents are pretty easy to knock out with a plastic mallet from the inside.

Nothing a few stickers won't hide.

For what its worth. Clean panniers, clean down with thinners and spray 3 coats of clear lacquer. Worked for me for 4 years. Still like new.

Vinyl will still mark and theres not much protection against scratches, better investment would be seat covers

I can't imagine something that's meant to stick the vinyl that well coming off too easily.

I've thought of doing that.....did you mask the black trim?..or did you spray the lot?

I masked the Black trim but was tempted. Might try it before the Winter.

I can't imagine something that's meant to stick the vinyl that well coming off too easily.

apparently it lifts without leaving any residue. The only warning they give is that it may lift old and damaged paint with it.

I've got to say I'm rather proud of the scrape on my pannier where a refuse truck hit me in the Crimea.

It is no more of a waste of money than burdening your bike with loads of tat to protect things like engine covers, or is that not the same type of character as corroded panniers

Agreed. Unless you are going to take the bike off road.
