I'm not a big fan of social media and other than forums like this place I'm not a member of FB/Instagram/etc. However, back in 2013 when the Gezi protests in Istanbul were in full swing I discovered something called Twitter. It was brilliant for keeping tabs on what was happening where and which corner riot police were hiding around!

Anyway, some of you may know that the Turkish government isn't as friendly as they make out. I quote Erdogan, then PM now President...

“There is now a menace which is called Twitter. The best examples of lies can be found there. To me, social media is the worst menace to society.”

Anyway, getting to my question, the govt frequently ban FB/Twitter as well a whole load of awesome porn sites! I recently installed Hotspot VPN to get round this and the results have been excellent. Only problem is I get an email with the following:

Hi d,

On Mon, Nov 9, 2015 9:56 PM GMT, we noticed an attempt to sign in to your Yahoo account dxxxxxx from an unrecognized device in United Kingdom.

If this was you, please sign in from a device you regularly use.

If this wasn't you and believe someone may have tried to access your account, please change your password and update your account recovery information.

Yahoo

I was signed on through a server in the UK. Is this normal....or is some scrote somehow trying to hack into my email?

I've had it happen when I've used my VPN.

I suspect its 'normal'.

Since using a VPN, (I dont use it all the time), quite a few sites seen to have suspicions as to my login location (UK VPN server). It's like they know its an IP address hiding potentially dodgy activity. I certainly have had Yahoo flagging an unrecognised or unusual location when using a VPN

For example BBC iPlayer, if you try to watch a programme from overseas and forget to enable your VPN, the BBC leave a cookie to flag that you shouldnt be watching so that even when you do enable the VPN you cant watch stuff unless you clear the cookie first.

Only today, using a VPN, Google wouldnt let me search without first typing in a check code.

Oh, and I've had it with this site too when using a VPN, only sometimes mind

enabling my VPN prevents me sending email.

Yes it's normal and a safety feature. Bit like if you go abroad and try to use a credit card without warning them your traveling. Google does it as well and sometimes if they don't like the server ip address they ask you to do a capcha.

You maybe want to find a better end point than the UK by the way. The way things are going here we will soon be more restricted than you are!

Yep, Skype/Microsoft Mail do the same. If you're abroad you have to enter a code sent by SMS in order to get access.

Had a feeling it was the norm, but wanted some reassurance just in case. Cheers all :beerjug:
