Hi,

Just perfromed "disc clean-up" on pc running W-98, and at next boot, it asked me for cd serial number. Needless to say, this is lost in mists of time. I think the pc came as a mongrel with W-98 installed.

Any suggestions how to restore this thing without losing the installed software and data?

If I get a bootleg W-98, with presumably a different serial no., will it work?

Thanks,

Bin

It's a long time since I've used w98, but IIRC there are applets out tere thatwill 'find' your serial.....it's buried in the registry somewhere and as you just cleaned up rather than reformatted, it should still be there.

In answer to yor second question though...yes :thumb

Google is your friend ;)

Is there a way to find the serial no. from DOS, because as you will imagine, the Windows session closes down and switches off the 'puter if you don't have the no. ??

Meanwhile, I will try to buy a W98 from the , ahem, local dealer......

Just texted **EDIT - Serial removed - EDIT** to daughter to see if it works.....
Sorry to be a pain, I have removed the serial from your post as we could get into trouble for having it posted here ;)

Thanks to all for helpful advice, Daughter #3 is buried in exams and could not be asked to wash a plate, never mind enter a serial number, fair play, she is hard at it.
I'll be at home in a fortnight for a few days and hopefully will nail the problem then!
